Sønder Nissum brings together a distinctive church, several memorials and the Multihallen, whose facilities range from sports to access to the local history archive. Cultural history is thus reflected in several ways: in the building and its furnishings, in the remembrance of specific events, and in the connection to today’s leisure activities. These highlights can help you plan your stay: consider whether church architecture, memorial history or physical activity is most important for your trip.

Church: Architecture and Furnishings

Sønder Nissum Church is a landmark on the coastal road between the two western access roads to Sønder Nissum. It was built in the Romanesque style from granite blocks, bricks and locally made stones; its tower is late Gothic. Romanesque architecture and a late Gothic tower design therefore meet in the same church building, while the materials mentioned further define its architectural character.

The furnishings also feature art-historical details: the pulpit and sounding board are Renaissance works from the beginning of the 17th century, and the three-panel altarpiece dates from 1587. The Romanesque building, late Gothic tower and Renaissance pulpit and sounding board make it possible to distinguish several periods of design. The altarpiece adds a separately dated reference.

Memorials and Historical Connections

In the cemetery at Sønder Nissum Church, a Commonwealth War Graves memorial commemorates ten English and Canadian airmen and sailors who lost their lives in the Second World War. There is also a cast-iron plaque from 1868, as well as a separate memorial to the victims of the English warships HMS Saint George and HMS Defense. Both ships sank on Christmas Eve 1811. Another historical landmark is the Genforeningsstenen Nissum memorial stone, unveiled in November 1920. These dates refer to different events: 1811 to the ships’ sinking, 1868 to the year of the plaque, and 1920 to the unveiling of the memorial stone.

Multihallen: Sports and Local History

The Multihallen offers a different focus. It has a café and meeting rooms and provides access to the town’s local history archive. Sports facilities include fitness, squash, a climbing wall, mini courts for ball sports, tennis, badminton and volleyball. This brings physical activity, meeting spaces and local history together in the same facility. If you are planning to visit the Multihallen for a particular activity, check its current availability before your visit, as individual offerings may change.
