Nørre Fjand: Protected Areas, Coastline and Archaeology
Accommodation in Nørre Fjand
Nørre Fjand brings together protected landscapes, coastal features and archaeological traces. Two protected areas cover a total of 23 hectares. To get your bearings, it is worth noting their different focuses: landscape protection and nature conservation sit alongside evidence of earlier settlement. There are also walking options in the Nissum Fjord area and places to visit around Nørre Fjand.
Protected Areas and Coastal Landscape
Nørre Fjand’s second designation as a protected area dates from 1983 and aims to protect archaeological values. A landscape protection measure near Nørre Fjand, introduced in 1975, has a different focus: it is intended to protect and preserve the distinctive landscape along Nissum Fjord. The landscape-protected area designated in 1975 is open to the public.
There is a separate access restriction for viewing the archaeological area: it can be seen from a public road, but the area itself is not open to the public. Archaeological investigations in Nørre Fjand have identified traces of around 50 house sites. They span roughly 400 years, from 200 BC to around AD 200. The history of the place therefore extends well beyond a single period.
The coastal landscape can also be described through its different landforms. Near Nørre Fjand, inactive coastal cliffs lie behind tidal marshland. There are also well-developed spits and beach ridges. So anyone interested in the shape of the coast will find more than just one type of landscape here.
Nature conservation includes a measure from 2015: at the time, around 30 hectares of beach meadow and a Natura 2000 area were fenced off for cattle grazing. Grazing the beach meadow is intended to reduce further scrub encroachment and overgrowth, and to support wildlife and plant life. This links the protected landscape with a specific conservation goal, without implying that the measure created an additional walking trail.
Walking and Finding Your Way Around Nissum Fjord
In the Nissum Fjord area, accessible routes for walking, cycling and horse riding run around most of the fjord. One clearly defined walking option is the 15.2-kilometre Husby Klitplantage route, a premium hiking route listed for Ulfborg and Nørre Fjand. It passes through varied terrain close to the water and through dunes. This makes it possible to distinguish a specific route from the broader range of trails in the fjord area.
One landmark along the Husby Klitplantage route is the Bjerghusevej bus stop in Fjand. The route passes it, and the stop is served by bus 270. If you would like to include the bus in your walking plans, check the timetable in advance. Nearby Nørre Fjand, Helm Klink Havn at Fjand is also named as one of the small natural harbours around Nissum Fjord.
Exhibitions and Places to Eat Nearby
For a different focus, the gallery at Fjand Gårdbutik hosts changing exhibitions and workshops featuring work in progress. The café at Fjand Gårdbutik serves freshly ground coffee, homemade pastries or chocolate, as well as light meals. You can also combine a stay in the area with a cultural visit or a meal, while the protected areas, coastal features and walking routes provide the connection to nature and landscape.
