Helsingør brings together Renaissance history, maritime trade history and an industrial shipyard tradition. You can choose different focal points for your trip: Kronborg represents the castle and Hamlet, the old town its preserved houses and lanes, and the museums its trade and shipyard history.

Kronborg and the historic old town

The outstanding Renaissance castle of Kronborg is the setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Visitors can walk through its grand halls and climb the tower, which offers views across the Øresund. From Helsingør station, the castle is a ten-minute walk along the harbour; the actual walking time may vary depending on conditions. A visit to the castle thus combines literary associations, Renaissance architecture, interiors and views from the tower. Visitor information may change, so check the latest details in advance.

Helsingør’s historic old town includes many well-preserved historic houses and lanes. Skibsklarerergaarden is a special testament to the Sound Dues era and is considered Denmark’s best-preserved merchant and ship-clearance yard from that period. The provision shop retains its original interior from 1809. People in historic dress, historical activities and tastings bring the place to life; the programme may change. The experience ranges from the streetscape of the old town to a single historic yard and its furnishings. Unlike Kronborg’s Renaissance and Hamlet associations, the focus here is the history of trade and ship clearance during the Sound Dues era.

Aquarium and sea safaris

Øresundsakvariet has touch pools, biotope aquariums and themed aquariums. The animals are fed daily; visitors can help with the feeding in the children’s touch pool. The aquarium also offers sea safaris departing from Helsingør. This gives you a choice of different ways to explore: visit the aquariums, watch a feeding or take a sea safari. Feeding times and departures may change; check the latest information before your visit.

Shipyard history and workshop

Værftsmuseet tells the story of 100 years of Helsingør Værft, once the city’s largest employer. In the Garage workshop area, visitors can try out various metalworking tools. A walking tour passes through the historic shipyard district; along the way, visitors can use images and audio recordings on their phones. The history of the shipyard, a route through the historic district and hands-on workshop activities come together here. Workshop offerings and digital content may change.

Cityscape between history and coast

Beaches are close to the historic buildings in Helsingør. The historic houses and lanes are not the only elements that shape the city’s character: the nearby coast also offers different experiences to consider when planning your stay.
