Dragove offers a varied coastal landscape as well as several religious and historical points of interest. When planning your trip, you can therefore weigh whether views from Veli Žal beach, the offshore islets, or the history and religious traditions of the town should take center stage. These themes provide a concrete starting point for your search for a hotel in Dragove.

Coast, islets and views from Veli Žal

The islets of Tatišnjak, Veliki Planatak, Mali Planatak and Magarčić lie off the coast of Dragove. Veli Žal beach is southwest of the settlement. From there, you can look out toward Mežanj and the open sea; Mežanj is visible from Veli Žal. These details highlight different aspects: the four islets are part of the description of the coast off Dragove, while Mežanj is specifically associated with the view from the beach.

This makes it possible to understand Dragove’s coastal landscape through specific names rather than describing it only in general terms as varied. If you are particularly interested in sea views when choosing a destination, Veli Žal is the named point of reference; the other islets add to the picture of the coast. The beach setting, viewing direction and offshore islands are different aspects of the landscape that can be considered together.

Religious traditions and historical traces

The sanctuary of Our Lady of Dubovica is located on Dumbovica, close to Dragove. Pilgrims come from the wider Zadar area, including for the feasts of the Assumption of Mary and the Nativity of Mary. The pilgrimage tradition thus connects the place with two specific dates in the religious calendar. For visitors interested in religious sites, this wider regional connection is part of Dragove’s history, alongside the sanctuary itself.

Distinct from this sanctuary are the parish church of St. Leonard and the Roman remains below Dubravica Hill. The church is part of Dragove’s visitor heritage; the remains are another historical point of reference. The names Dumbovica and Dubravica also refer to different places here: the sanctuary is on Dumbovica, while the Roman remains lie below Dubravica Hill. Together, these features represent different aspects of local heritage—religious tradition, the parish church and ancient traces.

Općina Sali: regional natural and cultural context

In the wider destination of Općina Sali, Telašćica Bay was declared a nature park in 1988. The nature park includes quiet beaches and steep cliffs. Sali is the settlement closest to the nature park and the easiest access point to reach from the mainland. These regional details offer another point of connection with nature alongside Dragove’s own coastal landscape.

Also in Općina Sali is Saljsko polje, which was protected as a special botanical reserve in 1969. It is home to olive trees up to 700 years old. The dates distinguish the two protected-area designations: 1988 is the year Telašćica was declared a nature park, while 1969 is the year Saljsko polje was protected. The ancient olive trees add another distinctive feature of the landscape to this conservation context.

The cultural heritage in Sali is also part of the context of Općina Sali. The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary has a monumental wooden high altar dating from the 17th century. The Church of St. John in Sali, in Stivanje polje, is first mentioned in written records in 1064 or 1065. These two points of reference have different historical emphases: a 17th-century altar in one case, and the early documentary mention of a church in the other.

Saljske užance is a three-day local festival in Sali that has been held for more than 50 years. Tovareća mužika includes various drums and old iron clothes irons filled with pebbles and used as percussion instruments. The Budnica is performed on Sunday morning during Saljske užance. During several performances, Tovareća mužika moves through the entire village, stopping at various places to perform its program.

For cycling enthusiasts, Općina Sali also has the described cycling route No. 13: it runs from Sali via Vela Ploča and Čuh Polje to Dugonjive and Mala Proversa and is 7.9 kilometers long. The route is marked on an older tourist map. If you plan to ride it, check the condition of the route locally.
