Veli Rat: Lighthouse, Marina and Sakarun
Accommodation in Veli Rat
Veli Rat can be identified by several clearly distinguishable local landmarks: the lighthouse northwest of the settlement, Baotić Marina and Sakarun sandy beach southeast of the town.
Lighthouse, marina and sandy beach
The Veli Rat Lighthouse, also known as Punta Bjanka, stands about 3 km northwest of the settlement and is 42 m tall. Its grounds include a chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas. From the shore, the view stretches out over the open sea. This brings together a structure, a religious dedication and a view of the sea at one prominent spot. Apartments are offered at the lighthouse; availability and reservations may change. When deciding on a hotel, distinguish this apartment accommodation as a separate type of lodging from hotels.
Veli Rat also has Baotić Marina, with a reception and sanitary facilities. Check the latest information about the facilities before your visit.
Sakarun is a sandy beach southeast of Veli Rat. Together with the lighthouse, located about 3 km northwest of the settlement, it provides clear directional orientation: the beach and the landmark are distinct reference points. If you plan your stay around a beach or a prominent structure, you can consider these features separately.
In the wider destination of Općina Sali
Telašćica Bay was declared a nature park in 1988. The nature park includes quiet beaches and steep cliffs. Sali is the settlement closest to the nature park and the easiest access point from the mainland. The wider destination of Općina Sali therefore offers a distinct perspective on the nature park and coastal landscape.
Saljsko polje was protected as a special botanical reserve in 1969. Olive trees growing there are up to 700 years old. The protection category and the age of the trees offer two different ways of understanding this landscape: through its history of protection and through its ancient trees.
The churches in Sali also offer points of cultural and historical interest. The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary has a monumental wooden high altar from the 17th century. The Church of Saint John in Sali (Stivanje polje) is first mentioned in a document in 1064 or 1065. The dates refer to different things: in the first example, to the altar; in the second, to the earliest documentary mention of the church.
Saljske užance is a three-day local festival in Sali that has been held for more than 50 years. During the festival, Tovareća mužika parades through the entire village, stopping at several places to perform its program. Budnica on Sunday morning is part of Saljske užance. Various drums and old iron irons filled with pebbles are used as rhythm instruments. The festival’s duration, program and instrumentation offer different insights into this local celebration.
