Coastal Setting and Bays

Brbinj lies between the bays of Jaz and Lučina. Southwest of the settlement is Brbinjščica Bay, with striking rocks and numerous caves; it also serves as a sheltered anchorage facing the open sea. This brings together a location between two bays and another rocky bay with caves and an anchorage, situated to the southwest.

Getting Here by Ferry or Boat

Jadrolinija ferry 434 connects Gaženica with Brbinj. The crossing is listed as taking 1 hour and 40 minutes. Since duration and service can change, check the operator’s information before traveling. Guest boats have berths with access to water and electricity. When planning, you can distinguish between two arrival considerations: the crossing time on the ferry route and the facilities available at the berths.

History and Diving

Brbinj has a history dating back around 800 years. Its cultural heritage includes Glagolitic priests, who served as guardians and promoters of Croatian literacy in the area. On Dugi Otok, the underwater cave Brbišćica is one of the named dive sites. Thus, the writing tradition associated with Brbinj and a dive site on Dugi Otok represent distinct cultural and active pursuits.

Nature and Culture in Općina Sali

In the wider destination of Općina Sali, Telašćica Bay was declared a nature park in 1988. The nature park includes quiet beaches and steep cliffs. Also in Općina Sali, Saljsko polje was protected as a special botanical reserve in 1969. It is home to olive trees up to 700 years old. The two protected areas have different focuses: Telašćica represents the coastal landscape, while Saljsko polje represents the botanical reserve and its ancient olive trees.

In Općina Sali, Sali is the settlement closest to Telašćica Nature Park and the easiest access point from the mainland. Cycle Route No. 13 runs from Sali via Vela Ploča and Čuh Polje to Dugonjive and Mala Proversa; it is 7.9 kilometers long. The route is shown on an older tourist map. Confirm the trail conditions locally before relying on them in your plans.

The churches in Sali also offer different points of historical interest. The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary has a monumental wooden high altar from the 17th century. The Church of St. John in Sali, in Stivanje polje, is first mentioned in a document in 1064 or 1065. One church is notable for its 17th-century altar, the other for its early documentary reference.

Saljske užance and Local Culture

Saljske užance is a three-day local festival in Sali and has been held for more than 50 years. Tovareća mužika uses various drums and old iron irons filled with pebbles as percussion instruments. The Budnica is performed on Sunday morning during Saljske užance. In several performances, Tovareća mužika moves through the entire village, stopping at several places to perform its program. Thus, the festivities include both a set time on Sunday morning and performances with several stops.

The 2026 Saljske užance program also included cooking brudet and other seafood dishes. If you plan to attend a later edition, check its program.
