Municipality of Gradina – Sacred History and Drava Landscapes
Accommodation in Municipality of Gradina
A protected chestnut avenue dating from 1883 surrounds the Church of St Elijah the Prophet in Gradina. Together with the church’s history, a Way of the Cross and bodies of water in several localities, it gives the Municipality of Gradina its distinctive character. The municipality lies in the Drava lowlands, south of the Drava River; the Mura-Drava Regional Park also extends across its territory. For your trip, you can choose different focuses, from sacred history and landscapes to nature observation.
Church and Local History in Gradina
The foundations of the Church of St Elijah the Prophet were laid in 1775 by parish priest Josip Nesek. The church was painted in 1904 and 1905, and its interior was painted again in 2004 and 2005. The rectory in Gradina also has a specific historical date: it was built in 1783. The chestnut avenue planted in 1883 that surrounds the church is now protected. Several distinct traces come together here: a church with documented decorative paintings, the rectory and a protected stand of trees.
Way of the Cross and Religious Tradition
A Way of the Cross with stations connects the apparition site of Our Lady of Gradina with the Church of St Elijah the Prophet. At the apparition site there is a cross and a place of prayer with a shaded bower. Prayers and the rosary are said there, Marian songs are sung, candles are lit and flowers are laid. The Way of the Cross and the religious practices described give the area a distinctive spiritual significance. If you are interested in sacred history, you can consider this alongside Gradina’s architectural and local history.
