Seget Gornji is considered a rural oasis in the hinterland of the Seget area and contrasts with the coastal settlements of Seget Donji and Seget Vranjica. Churches, archaeological traces and trails in the wider Seget area offer different points of interest when choosing where to visit: they range from architectural history and prehistoric traces to a hiking route with views over Seget Bay and the islands.

Churches and Archaeological Traces

The St. Elias site includes a single-nave early Romanesque church dating from the 13th century, with a semicircular apse, as well as a cemetery. The prehistoric hillfort surrounds the summit of Sutilija. “Single-nave” describes a church building with one main nave; the semicircular apse is another feature of its architecture. Here, a medieval religious building and a prehistoric fortification can therefore be viewed as distinct layers of history.

The Church of St. Vitus in Baradići is registered as a cultural monument and is considered a single-nave Romanesque church. It includes traces of a pre-Romanesque phase from the 12th century, a medieval cemetery and decorated tombstones. The precise dating is useful when comparing the two churches: the 12th-century date refers to a pre-Romanesque phase at St. Vitus; the Church of St. Elias dates from the 13th century and is early Romanesque.

Near Gornji Seget, remnants of Roman quarries lie on the northwestern side of the field below Mount St. Elias.

Trails in the Wider Seget Area

In the wider Seget area, Napoleon’s Road runs as a hiking route from Seget Donji towards Sutilija. It passes olive groves and vineyards and leads to an old church on a hill. From there, panoramic views extend over Seget Bay and the islands. The route, landscape and destination offer different aspects of this trail: its course through olive groves and vineyards, as well as the view from the hill.

More Highlights in Općina Seget

In the wider destination of Općina Seget, the Trail of Health runs from Seget to Napoleon’s Path, continuing to the 13th-century Church of St. Elias and the summit of Mount Vlaška. The trail is suitable for both hiking and cycling. Napoleon’s Path was built in 1807 during French rule over Dalmatia and converted into a Trail of Health. These historical details distinguish the path’s origins from its present-day use as a health trail.

The buildings in the wider destination of Općina Seget also offer their own historical highlights. The Baroque Church of Gospe od Ružarija dominates the centre of the castle and was built from white dressed stone at the beginning of the second half of the 18th century. In the Seget field stands the square Renaissance tower of the Statilić family, dating from 1516. Both buildings offer architectural points of reference distinct from the Romanesque churches near Gornji Seget and Baradići.

Seget’s patronal feast day is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and is celebrated on the first Sunday in October. In the old harbour of Seget Donji, fishermen come ashore and display their catch; a centuries-old Mediterranean tradition continues there. These examples complement the architectural history with religious tradition and daily life in the harbour in the wider destination of Općina Seget.
