Municipality of Proložac: River Landscapes, Lakes and Culture
Accommodation in Municipality of Proložac
The Municipality of Proložac lies on the northeastern side of the Imotsko-Bekijsko Field. River springs, lakes, a via ferrata, historic churches and local traditions offer a range of starting points for planning your trip.
River Springs, Lakes and Fishing
The karst river Vrljika rises from five springs on the border between the Municipality of Proložac and the City of Imotski. Dva oka are unique, round springs and form the source of the Vrljika; they are under strict protection. The upper course is home to the endemic softmouth trout (Salmothymus obtusirostris). The stretch of the Vrljika from the springs to the bridge at Perinuša was designated a special ichthyological reserve in 1971.
Proložac is known for Prološko jezero, also called Proložac Lake, which is about 35 metres deep. Green Lake was created in 1985 in Ričice as a reservoir. Ričice Lake is suitable for recreational and sport fishing. Since conditions and regulations may change, check the current local rules before fishing.
Via Ferrata and Canyon
The Ferata Imotica Ričice via ferrata is located on a cliff overlooking Green Lake in Ričice, within the Municipality of Proložac. It is 285 metres long, with an elevation difference of 160 metres. Ferata Imotica complements a circular hiking trail through Badnjevice Canyon. The length and elevation difference are two distinct measurements of the route; the lake view adds a specific landscape feature.
Churches, Meadow and Cultural Sites
The Church of Our Lady stands at the Opačac archaeological site, near the source of the Vrljika River by Imotski. It was built in 1719 on the foundations of a somewhat larger 14th-century church. It is also a pilgrimage site: several thousand pilgrims gather there, especially on the Feast of the Assumption. The Church of St. Michael in Donji Proložac is a protected cultural asset. The Green Cathedral is a meadow called Lučica, with centuries-old trees along the Vrljika. A large stone votive cross was erected on Kokića glavica in Donji Proložac in 1995.
Traditions and Wine
The traditional Prološka kužina brings together local cuisine, music and socialising. It traditionally takes place on 5 August. If you would like to include the date in your travel plans, check the local announcement for the relevant year. Recurring traditions also include living nativity scenes in the dried-up riverbed of the Suvaja. The two traditions take different forms: Kužina brings together cuisine, music and socialising, while the nativity scenes take place in the riverbed.
Viticulture also has a specific historical connection to Donji Proložac. The Grabovac family has been growing grapes and producing wine for more than 200 years. In 1812, Stipan Grabovac received a licence to produce and sell wine.
