In Postira, there are many reasons to visit, from beaches in the town centre to churches and early Christian remains. Dol offers a different village setting: it is a medieval village with about one hundred inhabitants. Together with hiking trails, climbing routes and events, the Municipality of Postira offers several themes around which you can plan your trip.

Churches, Archaeology and Literature

The parish church of St John the Baptist in Postira was built in the mid-16th century. Remains of an early Christian basilica dating from the 6th century were discovered at the foot of the church. The Lazanić family’s castle in Postira is the birthplace of Croatian poet Vladimir Nazor (1876–1949). This site connects local history with a tangible biographical link to Croatian literature.

A more than 400-year-old tradition of folk church singing is kept alive in Dol. The landscape also has its own distinctive features: around thirty natural, shallow caves are among the village’s special attractions. A culinary tradition is Hrapoćuša from Dol, a dish from the island of Brač. The skills involved in preparing it have been included on the Croatian Ministry of Culture’s list of protected cultural heritage.

Traditions and Events

Postirsko ljeto is a traditional cultural and entertainment event. It includes, among other things, celebrations of St John the Baptist, Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Assumption of Mary. The “Olive Picking World Championship” has been held in Postira since 2017 and takes place in October. Tastings, excursions and entertainment evenings are part of the programme on every event day. Individual programme items may vary from one edition to another. If you would like to plan your stay around the event, check the dates and programme for the relevant edition.

Hiking, Climbing and Sports

The Trstena climbing area can be reached from the main road via an easy 10- to 15-minute walk. It has twelve climbing routes graded from 5a to 7a+. Via Brattia is an approximately 140-kilometre circular tourist and hiking route that passes through Postira. The Postira–Vidova gora–Bol trail is a different undertaking: it is 21 kilometres long, connects the north and south of the island of Brač and takes about six and a half hours on foot. This makes it easy to distinguish between a long circular route and a several-hour crossing of the island. Markings and trail conditions may change, and walking times may vary.

Postira’s sports centre has two natural-grass football pitches, two tennis courts, a cageball court and a bocce court. Dol can be reached from various directions via well-maintained roads and paths. In Postira, Škarića dvori is home to the narrowest street, known as “Pust me proć”.

Beaches and Coves

Three pebble beaches and one sandy beach stretch along about three kilometres in the centre of Postira. LovreÄŤina is the largest sandy cove on the island of BraÄŤ. It is also home to an archaeological site featuring the 5th-century Basilica of St Lawrence. The cove thus combines a striking landscape setting with early Christian history.

Boat trips to hidden coves and beaches on the island of Brač are available from Postira. If you would rather travel on foot, the hiking routes suit different time budgets: Via Brattia is around 140 kilometres long, while the Postira–Vidova gora–Bol trail is estimated to take about six and a half hours on foot. Which option suits your stay therefore depends mainly on whether you want to plan a circular route or a single longer journey across the island.
