Dol Between Stone Houses and Caves
Accommodation in Dol
Dol is a medieval village near Postira. Traditional flat stone-slab houses, natural caves, and the valley landscape give the place its distinctive character.
Valley, Caves, and Traditional Architecture
About thirty low-lying natural caves rise on both sides of the valley. Mediterranean vegetation and olive groves shape the surrounding landscape. Traditional houses made of stone slabs are also part of the scene. The Hrapoćuša stone caves are another defining feature of the village: they were once used as human dwellings. The traditional architecture and former use of the caves thus represent different aspects of the village’s history.
Dol can be reached from various directions via maintained roads and paths, including routes used by hikers and cyclists. If you are planning a tour, check the condition of the paths in advance, as it may change.
Cultural History and Hrapoćuša
Within the wider destination of Općina Postira, Dol maintains a tradition of church folk singing that is more than 400 years old. Hrapoćuša from Dol is a traditional dish from the island of Brač. The skills involved in preparing it have been included in the Croatian Ministry of Culture’s list of protected cultural heritage. The singing tradition and culinary heritage reflect two different sides of local culture.
Another historical facet of Brač is Gospodnetić Castle, a locally protected fortress with architectural features dating from the 16th to the 19th century. The estate preserves 16th-century stone beehives, considered an archaeological rarity.
Općina Postira: Cultural and Coastal Places
Three pebble beaches and one sandy beach stretch for about three kilometres along the centre of Postira. Lovrečina is the largest sandy bay on the island of Brač. It is also home to an archaeological site with the 5th-century Basilica of Saint Lawrence. These are distinct local attractions within the destination of Općina Postira.
Postira also has several historical landmarks: the parish church of Saint John the Baptist was built in the mid-16th century; remains of an early Christian basilica dating from the 6th century were found at its foot.
