Općina Podbablje: Landscape, Churches and History
Accommodation in Općina Podbablje
Općina Podbablje lies on the southern side of the Imotsko polje, below Mount Baba. The municipality is southeast of Split and belongs to Split-Dalmatia County in Croatia; it covers 42 square kilometres. It comprises eight settlements: Drum, Grubine, Hršćevani, Ivanbegovina, Kamenmost, Krivodol, Podbablje Gornje and Poljica.
Landscape and Poljica
Poljica is a village in a valley between hills. The Church of St. Anne and the Domljan House, considered a distinctive architectural feature of the place, are located there. The valley setting describes the landscape; the church and house are architectural landmarks that further characterise Poljica. If you are choosing a destination based more on its landscape or on the architecture in the village, these offer different points of interest.
Churches and Architectural History
In Kamenmost, the parish church of St. Luke stands beside the main road. Its present form dates from 1772; the church is also mentioned in connection with the year 1562. The two dates have different roles: 1562 is associated with a mention, while 1772 refers to the church’s present form. St. Luke’s is considered the oldest parish church in the Imotski region. During Ottoman rule, the church served as a fortification for local Christians. This means the building brings together a date, a regional context and a historical function. Its location beside the main road in Kamenmost also provides a specific geographical reference within the municipality.
Archaeological Traces
The archaeological references in Kamenmost also point to distinct periods. Remains of a Roman settlement are visible there. A late medieval cemetery and a stećak sljemenjak were found near the Kamenmost bridge. The visible settlement remains and the finds near the bridge therefore differ both in how they are described and in their historical context. Together with the history of the parish church, they show different aspects of Kamenmost’s past rather than forming a single history of a building or a discovery.
Literature and Cultural Heritage
Other local connections also give the municipality a diverse cultural profile. Nearby Krivodol is associated with the birthplace of the poet Tin Ujević. In Podbablje Gornje, the 2024 programme for intangible cultural heritage in the Imotski area lists traditional silk-making and folk costumes. Each topic has a specific local connection: Krivodol is linked to a literary biography, while Podbablje Gornje is associated with traditional culture. They complement the churches and archaeological traces with other perspectives on the municipality.
Choose the Right Local Connection
When searching for a hotel, you can pair the municipality’s name with the local connection you are interested in. The eight settlements together make up Općina Podbablje; individual cultural and historical points of interest, however, are associated with specific places such as Poljica, Kamenmost, Krivodol or Podbablje Gornje. This lets you match your search to the topics that interest you without treating the municipality as if it were a single locality.
