Kamenmost: Bridge, Mills and History on the Vrljika
Accommodation in Kamenmost
Kamenmost can be explored through the Vrljika, the historic stone bridge and several old mills. It also features traces of church and archaeological history, as well as the Put-Križa themed trail. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on the river and milling history, religious cultural heritage or the walking route.
The Vrljika and the Mills
A historic stone bridge with five arches stands over the Vrljika. Several old watermills have been preserved along the river. The bridge and mills provide two specific points of interest: crossing the river and its former use for milling.
The Markičuša Mill stands on the right bank of the Vrljika, west of the bridge in Kamenmost. The two-storey stone building is listed as a cultural asset and is considered an important hydro-ethnological feature of the Imotski region. Historically, horizontal millstones were located on the ground floor, while grain stores and living quarters occupied the upper floor. The layout brings together technical use and everyday life in a single building.
The Patrlj Mill stands on the left bank of the Vrljika in Kamenmost. Its external horizontal wheel is of the “na tumbaz” type; the internal mechanism has also been preserved. The two mills have different points of interest: Markičuša helps visitors understand the building’s former spatial use, while Patrlj stands out for its wheel type and preserved mechanism.
Church and Archaeological Heritage
The Church of Saint Luke was first mentioned in documents in 1562. It acquired its present form in 1772. The loopholes in the church suggest that it served a defensive function in an earlier period. The first documentary mention dates to 1562; the church acquired its present form in 1772.
At the Kaldrma archaeological site lies part of a late medieval cemetery, about 50 metres from the bridge over the Vrlika, in the direction of Imotski. The archaeological zone around the bridge extends along both sides of the river and is listed as a cultural asset of regional importance. Kaldrma is the specific archaeological site; the archaeological zone, by contrast, extends around the bridge on both banks of the Vrljika.
Put-Križa Themed Trail and Connection with Nature
The Put-Križa themed route runs from the D60 in Kamenmost to the Ž6187 in Drum. It is used for walking and religious tourism. Crosses and chapels line the mostly wooded and hilly route. When planning your trip, you can make a route combining religious significance and landscape a focus in its own right.
The Vrljika also has a designated nature connection: it is part of the Natura 2000 site HR2000933. The site includes remaining habitats of the softmouth trout. This perspective complements the history of buildings and mills with the river’s role as a habitat.
