Zvečanje – Churches, Tradition and Trails
Accommodation in Zvečanje
Zvečanje is a historic parish of Poljica and a former katun. The parish had been independent since the 16th century. To the southeast, the area extends as far as the Cetina. If you are looking for a hotel in Zvečanje, its churches, procession tradition and varied route profiles provide a concrete framework for choosing your destination. For your planning, these can be divided into three main areas: sacred architectural history, the Prinos Gospin tradition, and routes on foot or by bike.
Churches and Local History
The Church of St. Michael is first mentioned in 1625 and was consecrated in 1781. The first mention and the later consecration mark different historical milestones. It stands on Gračina; the place name derives from an ancient Illyrian hillfort.
The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is in Gornje Selo. It is believed to have been built between 1625 and 1682. Above its main portal is a Bosančica inscription dated June 12, 1722. The construction period is therefore given as a range, while the inscription specifies a single day. The Church of the Holy Cross stands in the hamlet of Brdine. In 1745, it was described as a new church that was still under construction. It houses the body of St. Cvjetko, brought from the former Glagolitic seminary in Priko.
Prinos Gospin and the July Date
The Prinos Gospin tradition has been documented since 1608. If you would like to plan your trip around this custom, check the exact event date in advance. A 2018 account of local cultural history describes the traditional sequence of events: the statue of the Virgin Mary is carried about two kilometres to Gračina and returned to Gornje Selo on the last Sunday in July.
Hiking and Cycling
The Ilirska riječna staza is five kilometres long, of moderate difficulty, and takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. Historically, residents of Zvečanje used this route to travel toward Omiš. Another hiking route leads from Zvečanje to Lišnica, the easternmost peak of Mosor, and is called Milanova staza. The routes therefore have different destinations: the Ilirska riječna staza is historically associated with travel toward Omiš, while the Milanova staza leads to the summit of Lišnica.
The Omiš Evergreen cycling route passes through Zvečanje between Gata and Podgrađe. It is 42 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 613 metres, follows asphalt roads, and is suitable for all types of cycling. This gives you a choice of different activity profiles when planning: a moderately difficult walking route with a stated duration, a hiking trail to the summit of Lišnica, and a longer cycling tour with a specified elevation gain. Route and road conditions can change; check them before setting out on a planned ride.
