Donji Dolac can be understood through its sacred buildings and the landscape of its parish area. Its focal point lies around a small field in the hinterland. The parish church of St. Martin, several chapels and various route themes give the village historical and planning significance. If you choose a destination because you are interested in the history of churches and chapels, you will find buildings from different centuries, a protected route and a planned bathing area on the Cetina here.

St. Martin: Building History and Protection

The present-day parish church of St. Martin was built in 1898 from dressed local stone. It is the third parish church in Donji Dolac; the first parish church is mentioned in documents as early as 1482. The dates refer to different milestones: 1482 marks the mention of the first church, and 1898 the construction of the present place of worship. This makes it possible to trace the parish church’s history from its earliest written reference to the current building.

The sacred complex around St. Martin is under preventive protection and bears the designation P-2346. Those interested in sacred buildings can therefore consider the church both in terms of its building history and as part of this protected complex.

Chapels from Several Centuries

The chapels also reflect different historical periods. St. Jure is located in the Gorica field near Latkovići and dates from the 17th century. The chapel of the Immaculate Conception in Braovići, also known as Podkamen, already existed in 1745. This is not an exact construction date, but indicates that the chapel was already there at that time.

The chapel of St. Roko was built in 1762 on the site of an older chapel. It is located on Sutiska hill above the road. The chapel of St. Luke in Osoje was built at the end of the 19th or beginning of the 20th century, also on the site of an older chapel. When considering the buildings, it is worth distinguishing between these different date references: St. Roko has a construction year, St. Jure a century, and St. Luke a period spanning the transition from the 19th to the 20th century.

Landscape and Routes

The landscape of the parish area is shaped by the small field in the hinterland around which its focal point lies. The location of the chapel of St. Roko on Sutiska, above the road, provides another point of reference. If you are planning a visit there, check the latest access information in advance.

During the chapel of the Immaculate Conception’s restoration in 1997, a path of approximately 800 metres was prepared. Another route reference is the Težačka staza Donji Dolac–Gata: this route is under preventive protection and bears the designation P-5641. If you plan to include either route in your itinerary, it is advisable to check the latest information; for this route, in particular, check its course and signage.

A Planned Bathing Area on the Cetina

A bathing area is planned for Donji Dolac on the Cetina. Supporting facilities are planned, and existing mills could also be adapted for bathing. This makes the topic different from the historic churches and chapels: it concerns a project planned on the riverbank, not a confirmed bathing facility. If having a bathing spot matters to your choice of destination, keep in mind that the project is still at the planning stage.

Donji Dolac therefore brings together several distinct interests to consider when planning a trip: the history of the parish church of St. Martin, the chapels’ varied dates, the protected route and the plans for the Cetina. You can decide which aspects matter most to you, whether building history, landscape or the planned bathing area is set to shape your stay.
