Gata lies at the foot of Mosor in central Poljica, in the area of the former Republic of Poljica. Two specific aspects can help you plan your trip: the churches and Poljica Museum, with their historical connections, and the Putem naših starih hiking trail. This can help you decide whether to focus your stay more on local history, the landscape or a longer hike.

Churches and Poljica Museum

Poljica Museum opened in 1974 in an old brotherhood house near the parish rectory. The museum houses a mosaic by painter Joko Knežević measuring 10.30 by 1.80 metres. If you plan to visit the museum, check visiting arrangements in advance, as access rules may change.

The churches in Gata offer different historical points of reference. The parish church of St Cyprian took its present form around 1750, built on the foundations of an early Christian basilica from the 6th century. The church of St George in Gradac was built in its present form in 1933 on the site of a medieval church. A bell at the church of St Roch is dated to 1518. The church of St John the Baptist, meanwhile, is mentioned in Archbishop Cupilli’s visitation of 1711. Building phases, a dated item of church furnishing and a historical mention are therefore different ways of understanding local history.

Putem naših starih: route and orientation

The Putem naših starih route starts at the parish church of St Cyprian; Poljica Museum is also at the starting point. The route starts and ends in Gata, is 8.36 kilometres long and is classified as moderate. The estimated walking time is approximately three hours and 30 minutes. The trail alternates between asphalt and gravel sections; its highest point is at 458 metres. For planning, you can use the walking time as an estimate and check the route details again before setting out.

The stops also provide specific points of reference for following the route: after 2.27 kilometres, it reaches the church of St John the Baptist. It also leads to the church of St George in Gradac, with views towards the canyon. This gives you named landmarks to help you picture the route, in addition to its length and walking time. The elevation and the mix of asphalt and gravel add information about the trail, without turning the approximate time into a fixed duration.

Valley, Mosor and viewpoint

The landscape also includes the location of Gata parish in the western part of a fertile valley with numerous freshwater springs. Together with its position at the foot of Mosor, these details describe different geographical features: the mountain as a landmark and the valley with its springs. These details about the area complement the historical sites and hiking information with a view of the surroundings.

The Gata–Omiš viewpoint is nearby. Parking is available close by, and there is no admission charge. However, there is no footpath along the access road. Bear this in mind when planning your journey there. As access details may change, it is advisable to check them again before you set off.
