Set among gently rolling hills and stream valleys, the Municipality of Visoko has a distinctly rural character. Its settlements lie on the western slopes of Kalnik and include Čanjevo, Presečno, Vrh, Đurinovec, Kračevec, Vinično and Visoko. The region’s vineyards, the Belina Linden as a protected natural heritage site, and traces of local history are key features to consider when planning a trip. You can tailor your stay to your interests: landscapes and views, sacred architecture, or the history of Čanjevo Fortress.

Rolling Hills, Vineyards and Views

Visoko’s cultivated landscape is hilly and gently undulating. Stream valleys lie between the hills, while wooded areas in the north and south of the municipality form a relatively well-preserved natural landscape. Traditional vineyards on small plots are also part of this rural character. The vines grow on stakes, alongside distinctive stone or wooden klijeti. Vineyards, woodland and the varied terrain give the municipality a range of landscape features, without forming a uniform expanse of vineyards.

One specific viewpoint is the developed “Budin 2000-te” viewpoint near the hamlet of Brijeg. From there, the view extends south over the surrounding area towards Zagreb and beyond. The Belina Linden in Visoko adds a protected site to the natural and cultural landscape: it is protected as a natural heritage site in the category of a monument of park architecture. Alongside the viewpoint, visitors interested in such places can also find an example of the connection between natural heritage and local memory.

Church and Fortress: Traces of Different Eras

The Church of the Holy Trinity retains Gothic ribs in the choir and partially walled-up Gothic windows. The tower has a roof shaped like an octagonal pyramid, a form considered rare in the area. The site itself also has a long history: because of older architectural structures and continuity dating back to the Romanesque period, it is considered an archaeological site. Its varied features—preserved Gothic elements, an unusual roof shape and a history of earlier settlement—make the church a layered destination for visitors interested in cultural history.

Another prominent site is the medieval and early modern fortress of Čanjevo. It lies above the village of the same name, northeast of the municipal seat of Visoko. The oldest part was built around the middle of the 15th century. Since 2005, the cultural and tourism event “Bitka za utvrdu Čanjevo” has been held annually at the fortress. It recreates the lives of the fortress’s inhabitants in the late 16th century and a battle against the Ottomans. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the dates for your travel period.

The Belina Linden is also a cultural landmark. It was placed under special protection in 1966 and entered in the Register of Specially Protected Natural Monuments as number 202. Traditionally, it served as a gathering place for residents and is regarded as a symbol of Visoko’s identity. The traditional costume of Visoko is still worn with pride on special occasions. At the seventh edition of the kinča festival “Cvetje i tiči svete Roze,” visitors could take part in creative educational workshops and sample traditional cakes. The Lipanjski folklorni susreti began with a ceremonial procession through the centre of Visoko, followed by a programme on the stage in the large hall of the community centre.
