Gornji Kneginec: Church Art and Wine Tradition
Accommodation in Gornji Kneginec
Gornji Kneginec reveals two particularly distinct sides: sacred art at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene and a wine tradition that shapes Varaždin Breg. A historic well, springs and ponds also tell of different aspects of the local cultural landscape. Visitors getting to know the area can explore these themes individually: as architectural and religious history, wine-growing culture and a landscaped setting.
Church and Sacred Art
The Church of St. Mary Magdalene was probably originally built as a Gothic chapel in the 13th century. Preserved Gothic features recall this early form and make the building’s history a visible part of the church. Canonical visitation reports dating back to the early 17th century have also been preserved. The site thus combines surviving architecture with a long ecclesiastical tradition.
Four stained-glass windows add distinctive touches to the church interior. They depict St. George, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Mary Magdalene and redemption through the Eucharist. The windows complement the Gothic features with a clearly defined iconographic program; the building’s history and its religious depictions thus offer two different ways of appreciating the church.
Wine Growing around Varaždin Breg
The vineyards around Varaždin Breg in Gornji Kneginec belong to the Western Continental Croatia wine-growing region, the Zagorje–Međimurje subregion and the Varaždin wine-growing area. This classification identifies three levels of wine growing, from the larger region to the specific wine-growing area. Varaždin Breg also has a centuries-old tradition of wine growing and winemaking.
The local wine-growing culture also includes a traditional architectural form: the tradition of building Zagorje wine cottages, known as klijeti, has endured in the wine-growing area. Wine growing, winemaking and these distinctive cottages tell different aspects of the same tradition. Those interested in regional wine culture will therefore find not only a geographical classification here, but also a cultural theme connected to the landscape of Varaždin Breg.
Wells, Springs and Ponds
Bauerov bunar in Banjščina, on Bauerbreg, dates from 1784. It is listed in the Croatian Register of Cultural Goods as an immovable individual cultural property under the designation Z-442. The well is 137 metres deep and has an 80-metre-high column of water. These two measurements describe different dimensions of the structure and give a tangible sense of its scale in its historical context.
The Mozdernjak and Korečkovec springs have also each been landscaped in their own way. The source of the Mozdernjak stream was cleaned, restored and lined with stone; steps lead down to the spring basin. The Korečkovec spring was also landscaped and lined with stone. Residents regularly use it for small-scale purposes. At Mozdernjak, the landscaping all the way to the basin is the main feature, while at Korečkovec, regular local use is also part of the description.
The Ribnjaci OSTRIŽ ponds in Gornji Kneginec have a well-maintained promenade. Together with the springs, they offer another perspective on the local landscape, alongside the historic buildings and wine-growing culture. These places can be considered as distinct themes: the well with its date and measurements, the springs with their landscaping, and the ponds with their promenade.
Agricultural Practices
OPG Vukelić in Gornji Kneginec produces soft fruit, including currants from 1,100 bushes, as well as quinces from 185 trees. The crops are grown according to biodynamic farming principles. The farm also organizes training sessions on this production method. The specific crop numbers and the training sessions offer two distinct aspects of the agricultural theme: the crops themselves and the teaching of the farming method.
The local picture therefore ranges from Gothic features and stained-glass windows to a centuries-old wine tradition, springs, ponds and biodynamic production. Each theme stands on its own, but they can easily be included together in your travel plans if you would like to discover wine-growing culture and the landscaped cultural landscape alongside sacred heritage.
