Visoko – Church Art and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Visoko
Visoko’s local history includes the protected Church of the Holy Trinity and the Belina Linden. In the wider municipality of Općina Visoko, the history of Čanjevo Fortress, a south-facing viewpoint and a small-scale wine-growing landscape add further dimensions. This distinction is useful when planning your trip: the local architectural and natural monuments can be considered separately from the wider municipal area.
Church of the Holy Trinity
The protected Church of the Holy Trinity in Visoko has a three-storey Gothic bell tower topped by an octagonal stone pyramid. This roof shape is considered rare in the area. The church is already mentioned in the 1334 parish list of the Diocese of Zagreb. In the wider travel destination of Općina Visoko, Gothic ribs in the choir and partially bricked-up Gothic windows have also been preserved in the church. The site is considered an archaeological site because of its older architectural structures and continuity dating back to the Romanesque period. Several clues to the building’s religious and architectural history thus come together in one place.
The Belina Linden in Visoko
The Belina Linden is a protected natural heritage site and a monument of landscape architecture. It was granted special protection in 1966 and entered in the register of specially protected natural monuments as number 202. In Općina Visoko, the linden has traditionally served as a meeting place for residents; it has symbolic significance for Visoko’s local identity. Its history of protection and cultural role give the tree a different connection to local history than the architecture of the Church of the Holy Trinity.
Čanjevo and its history
In the wider travel destination of Općina Visoko, the medieval and early modern fortress of Čanjevo stands above the village of the same name, northeast of the municipal centre of Visoko. The oldest part of the fortress was built around the middle of the 15th century. The name castrum Chanyo is recorded for the year 1598. Čanjevo has cultural and historical value as well as heritage value. The different time references help place the site in its historical context: the oldest part of the structure dates to the 15th century, while its written name comes from the late 16th century.
Since 2005, the cultural and tourism event “Bitka za utvrdu Čanjevo” has been held annually at the fortress. It recreates life among the fortress’s inhabitants in the late 16th century and a battle against the Ottomans. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the dates for your travel period.
Landscape of Općina Visoko
Općina Visoko lies on the western slopes of Kalnik. It includes the settlements of Čanjevo, Presečno, Vrh, Đurinovec, Kračevec, Vinično and Visoko. The municipal area is hilly and gently undulating, with stream valleys between the hills. The landscape also includes vineyards, orchards, arable land, gardens and smaller woodland areas. The wooded areas in the north and south of the municipality form a relatively well-preserved natural landscape.
Small-plot vineyards are characteristic of Općina Visoko. The vines are trained on posts and accompanied by stone or wooden vineyard huts known as klijeti. Together with the orchards, fields and stream valleys, they create a landscape shaped by small-scale agricultural use. It differs from a purely forested landscape while also encompassing protected natural and cultural features such as the Belina Linden.
Viewpoint and getting around
