Orebić lies between Mount Sv. Ilija on one side and the Pelješac Channel on the other. The mountain and the channel provide two clear geographical reference points. There are also archaeological sites, churches, a monastery and maritime heritage. You can plan your stay around different interests: hiking, cultural heritage or a combination of both.

Hiking on Sv. Ilija

The steepest hiking trail to Sv. Ilija, Ruskovići (04), starts in Orebić. Both the route and starting point are clearly identified to help you plan your hike. As trail conditions may change, it is best to check them before setting out. The trail adds a specific hiking option to the cultural attractions. For trip planning, this activity is distinct from archaeological, religious and maritime themes: the focus here is on moving through the landscape.

Archaeological Sites and Protected Cultural Heritage

The Špilja Spila Nakovana archaeological site in Nakovanj is a protected cultural property. Spila Nakovana Cave was used as an Illyrian sanctuary during the Iron Age, in the 3rd to 4th centuries BC. Its classification as a sanctuary refers to its religious function during the Iron Age; its protected status designates the site as cultural property.

The protected cultural and historical complex “Povijesni prostor Nakovana” includes Gornja and Donja Nakovana. It therefore explicitly comprises two named places. Another protected cultural and historical complex is located in Viganj: “Povijesna ruralna cjelina Viganj”. This designation focuses on a rural ensemble and adds a different form of cultural heritage to the archaeological and sacred heritage.

Church, Monastery and Maritime History

The Church of Gospe od Loreta – Delorita in Kuna Pelješka was built in 1681 in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Loreto. Locally, it is known as Gospa od Delorite. The Franciscan monastery was built in the 15th century on Mount Sv. Ilija, at an elevation of 150 metres. The timeline thus stretches from the cave’s use during the Iron Age, to the monastery in the 15th century, and then to the church built in 1681.

The monastery houses the votive museum, which has a painting of the Virgin Mary said to have washed ashore in Orebić in the 15th century. Behind the Franciscan church is the captains’ cemetery, with the mausoleum of the Mimbelli family. The Pomorski muzej Orebić has archaeological, maritime and historical book collections and preserves the memory of captains and sailors. Maritime history is reflected in various ways: in the collections and the remembrance of captains, as well as in the captains’ cemetery with its family mausoleum.

Wine Tours and Trip Planning

Visitor activities include wine tours to Orebić’s wineries and wine cellars. If you are planning a specific tour, check the operators and dates in advance, as both may change. Hiking, archaeological and religious cultural heritage, maritime history and wine experiences offer different ways to shape your stay. When planning your hotel stay, consider which of these interests matter most for your trip.
