Mandre: Beach, Harbor, and Island Views
Accommodation in Mandre
Mandre is a coastal town whose character unfolds through its beach, harbor, and culinary traditions.
Harbor and Maritime History
Mandarska Bay has long provided shelter for boats traveling along the Adriatic, protecting them from all winds. Mandre’s harbor also played an important maritime role: historically, it served as an overnight anchorage and a refuge from the bora and other strong winds.
The traces go back even further. Along the coast of Mandre, you can see mooring bollards carved into the rock dating back to Roman times. These visible coastal features connect today’s view of the town with the shore’s former use by boats.
Beach, Promenade, and Trails
Mandre’s public beach is more than 3 km long and includes pebble and rocky areas. A promenade runs along the beach, with cafés and restaurants. You’ll also find a pastry shop, a water park, and a jet ski rental on the beach. The availability of these offerings may vary seasonally.
The nearby beaches also differ in the features described. Rogoza lies next to Kolanjsko Blato and can be reached by car or boat. Girenica Beach is nearby, 1 km away; it has clear water and a pebbly shore, and SUP rentals are also available there. Rental availability may be seasonal.
For a different kind of outing, the Kolanjsko polje trail is nearby. It is 7.4 km long and suitable for family walks and recreational athletes. When planning your trip, you can weigh up beach visits against the described hiking or sporting activity, while keeping in mind the differences between the locations.
Island Views and Excursions
From Mandre, you can see Silba and Olib. The islets of Maun and Škrda, with their bays and beaches, are also visible. Daily excursions to Silba and Olib are organized from Mandre. This offers two different ways to experience the islands: taking in the view from town and visiting the two islands on an excursion.
Coast, Cheese, and Festivals
Restaurants along the promenade serve Pag cheese, Pag lamb, and fresh seafood caught by local fishermen. Nearby, Sirana Gligora offers individual and group visits, as well as a tasting room with various menus featuring selected Gligora cheeses. This is another way to explore regional cheeses.
Fešta od janjetine takes place every June. The festival features spit-roasted lamb and mutton cooked in the traditional Kolan style; the specific food offerings may vary from one edition to another. The lamb celebrated there has an EU Protected Designation of Origin. The Sea Festival takes place every August in Mandre. If you’d like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the specific event dates in advance.
