Metajna is defined by a rugged coastal landscape where wind, stone, sea, and dry-stone walls come together. The area combines scenic impressions with a marked network of trails, several beaches, and a historic church. For travelers looking for a hotel in Metajna, these features offer different starting points for planning: would you like to spend most of your stay outdoors, take in the coast, or also learn about local history and cuisine? The differences below can help you choose a destination that suits your interests.

Walking Trails and a Challenging Climbing Section

The Life on Mars Trail network runs through Metajna toward several beaches. It includes four marked trekking trails totaling 16 kilometers. This figure refers to the total length of the network, not the length of an individual trail. The network is open year-round. As local conditions and access should be checked, it is advisable to verify both before setting out. The total length gives an overview of the trail network, but does not indicate which individual route will suit your schedule.

The route network also includes a difficult, 100-meter-long coastal via ferrata. It is intended for advanced active visitors and requires climbing equipment. Access is from Slana Bay, which is two kilometers from Ručica Beach. This section is therefore quite different from the overall length of the trekking trails: climbing equipment and the challenging nature of the route are the main considerations here. Check your equipment and safety conditions before setting out.

Beaches and Distinctive Rock Formations

Ručica Beach is one kilometer from Metajna and has a pebble-and-sand shore. You can reach it by car or boat; the walking route passes through the scenic Kanjon area. Beriknica, also known as Beritnica, lies south of Metajna near Ručica and is accessible by land or sea. Three rocks in its shallow water make the beach easy to recognize. The descriptions highlight different features: at Ručica, the beach surface and the route through Kanjon stand out; at Beriknica, it is the rocks in the shallow water.

The climbing rock Stogaj rises above Ručica and Beriknica/Beritnica. It is part of Pag’s wind-shaped, moonlike landscape. For travelers interested in distinctive rock formations, it is another striking landscape feature alongside the three rocks in the shallow water at Beriknica. The combination of coast, wind, and stone gives the surroundings their rugged character; the dry-stone walls are also part of this landscape.

Church and Culinary Traditions

The Church of the Visitation stands in the center of Metajna. It was built in 1487. Its historic bell dates from 1521 and is considered the third-oldest in the Archdiocese of Zadar. A visit to the church thus adds a specific cultural and historical dimension to the coastal scenery: the construction date and the bell point to different milestones in the area’s history.

Metajna is also associated with Pag cheese, lamb, fish, shellfish, and prosciutto. The preparations mentioned include grilled lamb, shrimp prepared buzara-style, and lamb cooked under a bell-shaped lid. This selection covers both ingredients and specific dishes and cooking methods. Which foods are actually on a menu depends on the individual menu and availability. When planning a stay, this provides a regional culinary connection alongside the walking and coastal themes.
