If you’re looking for a hotel in Sobra, you can plan your trip around two local focal points: arriving by boat and the hiking trails. Zaglavac Harbor welcomes connections from Dubrovnik and Prapratno; at the same time, a short nature trail and a considerably longer island route begin in Sobra. When choosing your destination, you can weigh up whether harbor traffic, bus connections, or hiking is your priority.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

The Austrian Way starts in Sobra and follows a short, 850-meter walk along a former Austro-Hungarian road. Along the way, there are views of a brackish lake and the sea. The Mediterranean vegetation along the trail includes Aleppo pines and holm oak forest; the trail also offers views of the brackish-water landscape typical of Mljet. This short route brings together the history of the road and the landscape, as well as impressions of the forest, lake, and sea.

Sobra is also the starting point of the 43-kilometer Mljet Hiking Trail, which connects island peaks with viewpoints. The difference in trail lengths is considerable: 850 meters for the Austrian Way and 43 kilometers for the Mljet Hiking Trail. Trail length is therefore an initial point of comparison when choosing between the short walk and the longer island route.

Arriving in and Getting Around Sobra

On the island of Mljet, the only ferry terminal is in Sobra. Zaglavac Harbor is about three kilometers from the town center and welcomes daily passenger catamarans from Dubrovnik as well as ferries from Prapratno. The harbor is also the starting point for buses to the island’s settlements. If your arrival or onward journey depends on a ferry, check the timetable in advance: ferry services are seasonal and may change.

Facilities in Sobra and at Zaglavac Harbor include a tourist office, the island’s only gas station, a shop, restaurants, taxis, and car and scooter rentals. At the town and harbor, you’ll find places to get information and food, as well as various local transportation options. As service availability can change, confirm specific offerings locally if needed.

Mljet in the Broader Context

In the wider destination of Mljet, Veliko jezero and Malo jezero are two deep bays called lakes, connected to the open sea via the Solinski Channel. On the island of St. Mary, in the southern part of the Great Lake, there is a Benedictine monastery and the Church of St. Mary. The monastery was built between 1177 and 1198; the central section of the church has retained its Romanesque style. This landscape and architectural history broadens the view of Mljet beyond Sobra.

Another hiking route on Mljet is the Mljetska planinarska obilaznica. It runs from the area of the national park to the island’s center and is marked with trail signs and stamps at checkpoints. Check trail conditions before setting out.
