When looking for a hotel in Mihotići, you can frame your visit around three specific interests: hiking the St. Luka Trail, the protected historic settlement core, and the Zvončari tradition. The trails, named ethnographic sites, and carnival processions offer different focuses for planning your trip.

Hiking trail and directions

The official St. Luka hiking trail passes through Matulji, Osojnaki, Trtni, Mihelići, Mohorići, and Biškupi. It then reaches Mihotići on the road toward Učka and leads back to Matulji. The route places Mihotići on a trail that includes several named places and a described return leg. If you plan to hike it, check the details locally before setting out.

To reach the Zvončarska muzejska zbirka, drive from Matulji along the road toward Učka and turn right at the Mihotići junction toward Rukavac. Check the museum’s current visitor arrangements before setting out. Mihotići is a landmark on the drive from Matulji to Rukavac.

Historic center, cultural heritage, and mosaic

At Put Perinovo 18 is “Žaničini,” a protected ethnological building of high value. Other ethnographic sites in Mihotići include “Guć” and “Cepovi.” The old settlement core is also protected as an ambient unit; special conditions apply to reconstruction. These protections thus extend from a single named building to the old village center.

Another cultural reference is the Mihotići mosaic. It was inspired by a folk tale about the origin of the settlement’s name and created as part of the Matulji art studio project “Mozaik,” carried out by seventh-grade students. Here, a local story about the name and the creation of the artwork as part of a student project come together.

Zvončari processions

A description published in February 2024 calls the Brežanski Zvončari procession a traditional carnival procession. At the time, the route was described as about twenty years old; a tradition grew out of a friendly gathering. It runs from Bregi through Frančići and Mihotići, into part of Rukavac, then back through Mihotići and Frančići. The route therefore passes through Mihotići both on the way there and on the return leg.

The Mučići procession takes place on Pusna nedjelja. Its 18-kilometer circular route goes through Kastavština and visits Mihotići. The two processions offer different planning considerations: for the Brežanski route, the route through the named places is a useful point of reference, while for the Mučići procession, these are the carnival date and the length of the circular route. If you are planning your trip around a procession, check the event dates in advance.

Općina Matulji as the wider destination

In the wider destination of Općina Matulji, carnival takes place in January and February, with the Zvončari Festival as its main event. The Zvončari are traditional carnival figures whose origins go back more than 500 years. This regional context offers another perspective on carnival traditions, while specific programs may vary. So check the dates if you want to plan your trip around an event.

Općina Matulji also offers a broader setting for hiking: the area has a network of 150 kilometers of cycling and hiking trails, including ten circular routes. In the protected landscape of Lisina, a hiking trail follows the scenic ridge of 1,037-meter-high Crni vrh. It begins southwest of the mountain lodge on Lisina. Check trail conditions before setting out.
