Kuželj – Cycling Routes, Kupa Landscapes and History
Accommodation in Kuželj
When planning a trip to Kuželj, it is worth considering what kind of activities you have in mind: the village features both on a longer section of a cycling route and among hiking paths and local nature and history attractions. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Kuželj, you can first decide whether cycling, a full-day hike, or river landscapes and architectural history should be the focus. The routes vary in length, elevation gain, and character; the chapel and bridges add clearly dated historical references to the picture.
River Landscapes and Views
Near Kuželj, a bridge above Kuželjsko okno offers views over the Kupa Valley and the peaks of Gorski Kotar. Kuželjska Stena is also nearby, a nesting site for rare and endangered peregrine falcons and golden eagles in Slovenia. The upper Kupa Valley is considered a well-preserved landscape with more than 100 butterfly species and is often called the “Butterfly Valley.”
The Bjelica offers a different river scene: the stream flows into the Kupa at Kuželj and passes beneath Savkin Bridge. These different aspects of the landscape sit side by side: views over the valley, an area with butterflies, and the course of a particular stream.
Cycling and Hiking
On its 40-kilometer section from Brod na Kupi to Tršće, the Gorski Kotar Cycling Trail follows the upper Kupa and passes through the hamlets of Kuželj, Gašparci, and Turke. The route also includes rapids and beaches suitable for swimming. The stated distance refers to this section of the trail. This provides a clearly defined cycling route with a riverside setting, several hamlets along the way, and opportunities to swim en route.
The Kostel Mountain Trail is a 19.1-kilometer circular route intended primarily for full-day hikes. It is rated moderate and has 880 meters of elevation gain. Taken together, the distance, elevation gain, and recommended time frame give a more complete picture of the hike than a single distance figure. As routes and conditions can change, check the latest trail information before setting out. One variant of the Kostel Mountain Trail runs along the road through Kuželj.
The Jelen Trail offers viewpoints towards the Kupa Valley and the Republic of Slovenia. A gravel path follows the Bjelica upstream and continues through the forest. The hiking and walking options therefore differ in their described features: the Kostel Mountain Trail emphasizes its circular route, elevation gain, and full-day planning; the Jelen Trail, its viewpoints; and the Bjelica gravel path, its course beside the stream and through the forest.
The Chapel and Bridges with a History
The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on the bridge in Kuželj. A mass was held there in 1874 while the parish church was being extended. In 2023, the 160th anniversary of the chapel’s construction was celebrated; the chapel was restored inside and out for the anniversary.
The bridge over the Belica in Kuželj was also commemorated in 2023 on the 160th anniversary of its construction. At the anniversary celebration, the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Road Administration was credited with restoring the bridge the previous year. If you plan to include the bridge in a tour, check current road conditions beforehand. The chapel and bridge thus offer their own historical points of interest alongside Kuželj’s nature and route attractions.
