When planning a stay in Čabar, you can weigh up three different focuses: protected cultural heritage, the source area of the Čabranka and the challenging circular hike at Tropetarska Stijena. This gives you different options: architectural and linguistic cultural heritage, the river and a mountain trail with panoramic views.

Cultural Heritage in Čabar

Zrinski Castle and the Parish Church of St Anthony of Padua, with its Stations of the Cross, are classified as protected cultural heritage in Čabar. This gives you two architectural landmarks for a cultural focus: the castle and the parish church with its Stations of the Cross.

The Čabar dialect is also recognised as protected cultural heritage in Croatia. Čabar’s cultural profile therefore extends beyond buildings: alongside the castle and church, a local form of speech is part of its linguistic heritage. For your travel plans, this offers a second perspective on culture in Čabar—architectural heritage on the one hand, and a protected dialect on the other.

The Čabranka and Its Source Area

The Čabranka rises from steep rocks at Veliki Obrh. Its source area is about a 15-minute walk from the centre of Čabar. The approach follows an asphalt road and then a short marked forest trail. When planning your visit, you can take both the road section and the final trail into account.

The Čabranka has been a protected area since 1961. There are waterfalls and rapids along its course. The Bridge of Love stands above the source. A riverside outing therefore takes in a named source and a bridge in the source area, while the waterfalls and rapids are found along the river.

Sport fishing is one of the activities in the source area. Check local rules and conditions before fishing. Kayaking is an activity on the Čabranka; check water conditions and local permits. These activities relate to different areas: sport fishing to the source area, and kayaking to the river.

Circular Route at Tropetarska Stijena

Tropetarska Stijena is a short, challenging circular route in the mountains. The easiest access to the route is from the Parg–Čabar road, by a sign bearing the route’s name. Short and challenging are both important characteristics here: the circular route is not automatically an easy stroll. So take its challenging nature into account when choosing between a riverside outing and a mountain hike.

The trail passes through lush vegetation and varied terrain. Panoramic views from the route take in nearby settlements, the centre of Čabar, Risnjak and the hills of neighbouring Slovenia. Near the upper end of the trail there is a shelter with a table, benches and an information board. Trail conditions and facilities may change; check current route information before your outing.
