Municipality of Blato: Culture, Coast and Trails
Accommodation in Municipality of Blato
Blato lies in the centre of the island of Korčula. History comes to life here at a parish church and an archaeological site, while recurring customs, marked trails and coastal experiences also shape the trip. Depending on your interests, you can explore the Municipality of Blato through culture, outdoor activities on land or water-based pursuits.
Blato and the bays as places to stay
Blato lies in the centre of Korčula. Accommodation is also available in the surrounding bays, which stretch for 40 kilometres along the island’s northern and southern sides. Prišćapac is a tourist destination with a pebble beach and additional tourist services. Prigradica, meanwhile, has retained the atmosphere of a small harbour.
Church, archaeology and local culture
The parish church of All Saints in Blato is mentioned in documents from the 14th century. It houses an altarpiece depicting All Saints and the Madonna and Child by Girolamo da Santacroce. The relics of Saint Vincenca are also kept in the church; every year on 28 April, they are carried in a procession through the town.
The archaeological site of Kopila, with remains of a Hellenistic necropolis, is located within the municipality. The local dialect, Govor Blata na Korčuli, is also part of the area’s cultural identity: a municipal notice dated 2 April 2024 lists it as intangible cultural heritage of the Republic of Croatia under number Z-7801.
The Barilo Ethno House displays an ethnographic collection of agricultural tools, traditional clothing, kitchen utensils, handicrafts, fishing equipment and household items made of stone. It also offers tastings of homemade liqueurs, rakija, arancini, roasted almonds and dried figs, prepared according to traditional recipes. As tasting arrangements may change, it is advisable to confirm them before visiting.
Festivals and recurring events
Every year on All Saints’ Day, Lumblija prepared according to traditional recipes is blessed and tasted in the main square, Plokata. The “Days of Lumblija” event is also organised. Blato Week is another recurring occasion: it takes place every year from 23 to 28 April and features concerts, exhibitions, religious processions and folklore performances. During Blato Summer, the Kumpanjija performs every week in the square in front of the church. Event details and seasonal programmes may change, so check the dates and programme before your trip.
Hiking, cycling and experiences on the water
The municipality has more than 140 kilometres of signposted cycling routes. Six marked hiking trails offer further ways to explore on foot, including Lungo Mare, Belvedere, Tragom povijesti, Sudbinska luka, Korčula na dlanu and Put Blažene M. Petković. The Belvedere hiking trail covers 4.5 kilometres from Prižba via Sv. Marko to Prišćapac. The Putem Blaženice Marije Petković trail follows the route Marija Propetog Isusa Petković took to Prižba and Ratak. When hiking or cycling, it is worth checking trail markings and conditions locally, as they may change.
There is a diving centre on the Prišćapac peninsula, where professional staff organise diving excursions and courses. Along Blato’s southern coast, the small islands are popular, secluded destinations for kayaking and motorboat trips. Natural areas are also part of the municipality: areas within the Municipality of Blato are included in the Natura 2000 ecological network. This means cultural visits, inland routes and water excursions are all available as different themes for planning your trip.
