Municipality of Vela Luka: Vela Spila, Trails and Local Culture
Accommodation in Municipality of Vela Luka
Vela Luka offers opportunities for a trip that brings together archaeological history, art and routes through the landscape. Vela Spila offers a glimpse far back into prehistory; hiking trails reveal different outdoor experiences, while mosaics and Lumblija bring local culture to life. You can tailor your stay to a particular interest—an archaeological site, outdoor activities or a culinary tradition.
Vela Spila and the History of the Place
Vela Spila is an important archaeological cave site in the Mediterranean region. The cave was inhabited from the late Palaeolithic to the Middle Bronze Age. Its history therefore spans a long succession of prehistoric periods. It lies on the southern slope of Pinski rat hill, 130 metres above Kale Bay in Vela Luka. Its position on the slope above the bay gives the site a clear geographical setting.
The Vela Spila hiking trail leads from Vela Luka uphill to this archaeological site above the town. If you are interested in history, you can combine a visit to the site with a hike. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Art and Collections in Vela Luka
The museum collections of the Vela Luka Cultural Centre are housed in a former school building constructed in the second half of the 19th century. They include modern and contemporary art, as well as archaeological material from Vela Spila. The collection thus brings together works of art and finds from the cave site's long history. If you are planning a visit, check current access arrangements in advance.
Another artistic feature shapes Vela Luka’s public spaces: mosaics created during the 1968 international artists’ gathering can be found along promenades and in public buildings. Art is encountered here not only in a collection, but also in various public spaces. This offers a different perspective on Vela Luka’s cultural life from the one found in exploring its archaeological finds.
Hiking: Hum, Dub and Other Trails
The fully marked Hum hiking trail starts in Vela Luka, by Gospa od zdravlja in Bobovišća. It is 2.5 kilometres long, takes about one hour and 20 minutes, and is considered easy. The trail offers views of Vela Luka Bay, the sea and neighbouring islands. The distance and approximate duration can help you fit this hike into your day; trail conditions may change.
The also fully marked Dub circular hiking trail starts either at Gospe od zdravlja in Bobovišća or at the Tommy supermarket. It passes through wooded areas and offers views of Vela Luka and the surrounding area. The two trails can be compared by their different features: Hum has a stated distance, approximate duration and difficulty level, while Dub is described as a circular route with two possible starting points. You can therefore decide whether a trail with a specified time estimate or a circular route with alternative starting points better suits your plans.
Beyond individual routes, Vela Luka’s outdoor offering includes more than 100 kilometres of hiking and cycling trails. They pass through centuries-old olive groves, along beaches, and through vineyards and pine forests. Ošjak is a protected park forest. This combination of marked trails and varied landscapes makes exploring the outdoors a distinct part of the trip, alongside the archaeological and cultural experiences.
Lumblija and Sporting Events
Lumblija is a ceremonial sweet bread and an aromatic dessert prepared in Vela Luka in the run-up to All Saints’ Day. The multi-day “Stajun od lumblije” event includes workshops where participants can make their first Lumblija. As event dates vary from year to year, check them if you want to plan your trip around a workshop.
Two trail races also start at the prehistoric site of Vela Spila: Vela strka, covering 22 kilometres, and Mala strka, covering 11 kilometres. The races follow a recurring format, but details may vary from year to year. If either race is important to your travel plans, check the dates and details for that year’s edition.
