Skitaca offers a variety of ways to plan your days in the village: trails cross the landscape to the Sv. Lucija spring, while the church and chapel showcase historic architecture. To get your bearings, it is worth looking at the different routes: from the roughly one-kilometre walk to the spring to longer loops on foot or by bike.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes

The “Labin Hiking Path” leads from Crna Punta via the Skitača mountain lodge to Oštri. Another route is the “Path of St. Lucia”: it runs from the mountain lodge through the village towards Brdo and ends at a spring about ten metres below the summit. The trail is considered easy, mostly straight and suitable for all age groups. If you plan to use the mountain lodge as a stopping point, check the latest operating and access information in advance.

The drive from Labin to Skitaca passes through Brgod and Brovinje. From the village, an easy walk of about one kilometre leads to the spring. The spring is on Brdo, where water collects in a small hollow in the rock. This makes it easy to distinguish the short walk to the spring from longer routes: the Vale di Tono trail passes through Skitaca and forms a 15.7-kilometre loop starting from Kamp Tunarica.

The two Bella Vista routes also have different highlights. The Bella Vista Trail leads over Glušići Hill to Skitaca and offers views of the Kvarner; on a clear day, Venice may also be visible. The Bella Vista cycling route links Labin and Skitaca in a 30-kilometre loop. The ride is estimated to take around two to two and a half hours. Route specifications may change, so check current trail conditions before setting out.

Landscape Around Skitaca

Skitaca lies in a clearing at an altitude of 425 metres, surrounded by four hills. This setting gives the landscape a distinct frame, with the spring on Brdo serving as a specific destination for a walk from the village. If your main aim is hiking, you can choose between the short walk to the spring and the longer loops. The Bella Vista loop is described as a cycling route with an approximate duration.

Church of Sv. Lucija and Nearby Chapel

The Church of Sv. Lucija was built at the beginning of the 17th century. It is a single-nave Baroque church with a central marble altar and two wooden side altars. It took its present form in 1924, the year construction began on the bell tower, which was left unfinished. The construction period, later form and different altar materials offer several specific details to look for when viewing the church.

North of Skitaca, St. Matthew’s Chapel is located in the forest of Prodol. It is a single-nave Gothic building. Together with the Baroque Church of Sv. Lucija, it offers an architectural comparison: both buildings have a single nave, but they belong to different styles.

Wine and Istrian Cuisine

The recurring festival “Skitača – fešta od vina, maneštre, pršuta i sira” features local wines, traditional Istrian maneštra, pršut and cheese. Alongside trails and buildings, the festival offers a distinct culinary focus. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check before travelling whether a date falls within your travel period.
