Crni: Between Cycling and Hiking Routes
Accommodation in Crni
For a stay in Crni, the routes that pass through the village provide practical orientation. On the Bella Vista route, Crni comes after Drenje; from there, the route continues towards the upper part of Labin. The Sveta Marina–Lookout Torneg hiking trail also passes through Crni and heads via Kosi towards Drenje before climbing to Torneg. The two routes have different focuses: Bella Vista is designated as a cycling route, while Torneg is associated with a view of the bay.
Cycling the Bella Vista route
Bella Vista is an official 30-kilometre cycling route from Labin to Skitača and back. As well as the total distance, the surface is another practical guide when choosing a route: nine kilometres are paved, while 21 kilometres are gravel. These technical details may change due to maintenance or weather. If you are planning the route, check the current trail conditions beforehand.
The route connects several different landscapes. It includes views over Kvarner and the area around Skitača. Ravni, a coastal village known for its beaches and surfing, is also mentioned in the route description. The route then continues via Drenje and Crni towards the upper part of Labin. This makes it possible to see Crni as a way point on a longer cycling tour, rather than just as a name at the end of a route.
Another cycling option is Clear-Eyed Lucy, an officially designated challenging trail. It reaches the villages of Derenje and Crni before heading back towards Labin. Its challenging rating sets this trail apart from the Bella Vista route, for which distance and surface are the main details provided here. The two routes therefore offer different information to help you plan your ride.
Hiking towards Torneg
The Sveta Marina–Lookout Torneg trail passes through Crni and Kosi towards Drenje, then climbs to Torneg. From there, at an elevation of 345 metres, you can enjoy a view of the bay. Both the villages along the way and the viewpoint destination help with orientation: the route does not just pass through Crni, but continues through other villages to a clearly identified viewpoint.
Another natural feature in the area is Školnica Svete Lucije: a natural limestone depression filled with water that almost never dries up. Check local access before visiting. Skitača is also associated with a local tradition about a victory over the Turks in 1661 near Crna Punta. This story should be understood as a tradition and adds a cultural dimension to the area’s landscapes.
Culture in the wider destination of Općina Raša
The wider destination of Općina Raša also has its own historical context. Raša was built between 1936 and 1937 as a planned mining town, based on designs by architect Gustavo Pulitzer Finali. The small Centar Arsia museum on Raša’s town square showcases the town’s mining heritage. Its history goes back further than the visible buildings: the Raša mine employed more than 10,000 miners from 1928 to 1966.
For a closer look at this industrial history, Kova Experience offers guided tours of the mine. Visitors enter a mine and experience a day in the life of a miner. Check booking details before your trip. This experience is associated with Općina Raša and should not be mistaken for an attraction in Crni.
The architecture in Raša also tells the story of its mining heritage. The Church of Sv. Barbara is a modernist and rationalist building with a 25-metre-high tower. Its shape is reminiscent of an overturned mining cart, and its bell tower of a miner’s lamp. The Church of Sv. Lucija in Skitača was built at the beginning of the 17th century and is a single-nave Baroque church. These regional cultural sites complement the routes through Crni with a distinct perspective on architectural history and mining.
