Šušnjevica combines a clear cultural theme with a variety of routes through the landscape. The Vlaški puti Ecomuseum is dedicated to the social history, traditional culture and language of the local community; there are also themed hiking trails and an official cycling route. When choosing what to explore, you can therefore consider whether you are interested in linguistic and cultural history, a hiking trail rated as challenging or a longer cycling tour.

Hiking Trails and Landscape around Šušnjevica

The Vlaški puti Ecomuseum comprises an interpretation centre and a media library in the former local school. The Ecomuseum’s themed hiking trails pass through Učka Nature Park and are connected with the life and activities of the local community. The Putevima kontrabanda trails also pass through the park and explore aspects of local history.

Kontraband 1 (KB 1) offers a specific trail profile: it starts at the Ecomuseum in Šušnjevica and first passes through forest, then through meadows and low vegetation, before reaching a viewpoint overlooking Istria. The route runs from Šušnjevica to Podmaj and is 5.97 km long. It is rated as challenging. As trail conditions can change, it is also advisable to check the markings and current conditions before setting out.

A Longer Cycling Route

The official cycling route 463 Around Čepić Field passes through Šušnjevica. It is 37.5 km long and rated as moderate. This gives it a different route profile from KB 1: the two ratings refer to different activities and classifications, not to a shared difficulty scale. When choosing a route, both its length and its specific rating are therefore important. Conditions on this route can also change.

Vlaški puti and Linguistic History

The Ecomuseum focuses on the social history and traditional culture of Šušnjevica, as well as the Vlach, or Istro-Romanian, language and culture. Its mission includes sharing knowledge about this language and culture. Šušnjevica is considered the largest Istro-Romanian settlement in the Labin Deanery—an indication of the village’s linguistic and historical significance.

The media library offers a dedicated way to explore this subject: it holds materials in the Vlach and Žejane languages, digitised publications about the language community, and publications on local topics. Alongside the hiking trails, the focus is therefore also on language and local life. Together with the themed trails, these resources offer a way to explore cultural history and the landscape through the community’s activities.

Church and Historical Traces

The cemetery church of St. Sylvester also preserves traces of the past. Surviving features include fragments of frescoes and Glagolitic graffiti dating from the 16th to the 18th century. The inscriptions complement the Ecomuseum’s focus on linguistic history with tangible evidence at the site. The church and these remains thus provide another historical point of interest alongside the trails, which interpret aspects of local history.

Setting within the Wider Destination
