Purgarija Čepić can be placed in context for trip planning through specific local landmarks and the broader themes of Općina Kršan. The Church of the Holy Trinity is located in the village; nearby, cycling route 463 runs around Čepić field.

Cycling Route 463: Distance, Surface and Route

Cycling route 463, Oko Čepićkog polja, is 37.5 kilometres long and rated as moderately difficult. Of this, 32.5 kilometres are paved and 5 kilometres are gravel. This breakdown gives a concrete impression of the surface, though conditions are not uniform throughout the route. It passes through Kršan, Vlašići, Čepić, Brdo, Šušnjevica and Kožljak before returning to Kršan.

Its rural surroundings include settlements below the Učka massif, where the landscape is shaped by livestock farming and agriculture. The route therefore highlights both the change between paved and gravel surfaces and an agriculturally shaped setting. Route information may be updated by the operator, so check the details before setting out.

Churches, Landscape History and Kloštar

The Church of the Holy Trinity is located at Purgarija Čepić 29. Other historical landmarks can be found nearby: Lake Čepić was drained in 1932, creating around 1,500 hectares of new farmland. This change marked a significant turning point in the history of the landscape. A record from 1689 also links Čepić with “black Čepić wine.”

The monastery in Kloštar is considered the first monastery in Istria and was in operation until 1782. Much of the building remains and is inhabited; it is arranged around a courtyard with a central cistern. If you are planning a visit, check the current situation in advance.

The Wider Destination of Općina Kršan

The Učka Nature Park lies in the hilly part of the territory of the Municipality of Kršan. Its habitats are home to numerous endemic, endangered and protected plant and animal species. The “Vlaški puti” Ecomuseum in Šušnjevica includes an interpretation centre, a media library and themed hiking trails through Učka Nature Park. The trails are connected with the life and activities of the local community.

The coast is also part of Općina Kršan: the municipality has nearly 13 kilometres of unspoilt coastline. It is steep and rocky, with wild beaches in coastal inlets. This coastal landscape is a distinct regional feature alongside the rural settlements and cycling route around Purgarija Čepić.

Fortified Towns and Historic Routes

Stari grad Kršan is a fortified town and one of the best-preserved castles in Istria. It was first mentioned in the 13th century. Visitors enter the town through well-preserved gates. Within the defensive walls stands the 17th-century Church of St Anthony the Abbot.

Kožljak Castle lies on the southern slopes of Učka, along an old route connecting ancient Histria and Liburnia. It was first mentioned in written sources in 1102. Steps carved into the bedrock lead to the castle; below it stands the Romanesque Church of St Hadrian.

Plomin lies below Sisol, at the entrance to inland Istria, and was built on the foundations of the ancient Histrian and Roman town of Flanona. The Church of Sv. Jurja Starog houses the oldest known Glagolitic inscription, the Plomin Inscription. In late May and early June, the endemic plant “Istarski zvončić” briefly adorns the façades of houses, the church, walls and baladure in Plomin.

Festival and Regional Culture

Kršan hosts the samoniklog bilja festival every year. It combines lectures, workshops and food experiences focused on wild plants and sustainable living. Workshops cover topics including natural cosmetics, tea, tinctures, oils and fragrances, as well as preparing dishes from wild plants. Exhibitors showcase plant-based products, while chefs prepare and present dishes made from wild plants. Check the dates and programme before your trip.
