Gradišće brings together a prehistoric settlement, preserved village architecture and several cycling routes. When planning a trip around Gradisce, it is worth considering the different routes and their respective destinations: Route 761 passes through Gradišće, while the “U srcu zelene Istre” loop includes the village in its route. Other landscape and cultural attractions lie along nearby Route 147.

Cycling Routes Through Gradišće and Žminj

The Route 761 Žminj–Feštini passes through Gradišće, also known as old Žminj. In the wider destination of Općina Žminj, the route begins beside the tower of Žminj. From there, it passes through the square in front of the parish church of St. Michael and through the old town along the old stone street “Štradi”. The route thus connects its passage through Gradišće with stops in the historic center of Žminj.

Another route is the “U srcu zelene Istre” loop. It includes Gradišće and runs from Kanfanar through Modrušani, Benčići, Rudani, Balići, Batlug and Katun. The two routes therefore offer different points of reference: Route 761 is associated with Žminj and Feštini, while the loop links several places along its route. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a cycling trip.

Prehistoric Traces and Village Architecture

Žminjsko Gradišče is a prehistoric fortified hilltop settlement with protection code PR. The prehistoric fortification associated with Gradišće is located on a nearby hill. According to local tradition, Stari Žminj was situated on the hill above the settlement of Gradišće.

The historic buildings include a preserved group of houses with baladurs dating from the early 19th century. At the entrance to Gradišće from Žminj stands the Matica family chapel: Antonio Matica had it built in 1929, and it was made in a local workshop in Valdedija. A chapel in Gradišće is dedicated to “Srce Isusovo i BDM” and dates from 1901. An inscription in a chapel dated 1929 mentions the names Matica Fradelan, Antonio and Vila Gradiscie.

The connection with Žminj is also reflected in a building material: stone from the Gradišće quarry was used for the slender columns of the parish church of St. Michael in Žminj. Thus, prehistoric traces, houses and chapels in Gradišće sit alongside a specific architectural link to the main town.

Landscape and Culture Along Route 147

Nearby Route 147 passes several landscape and cultural attractions outside Gradišće. These include the Kingdom of Festini cave, with its stalactite formations. The route also passes through the forest of Cere; from a clearing beyond it, there is a view of the peaks of the Učka mountains. Along the way is also the Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua, dating from 1734 and known as Pilj.

Another stop is the Church of St. Fosca. Its original small church building dates from the Byzantine period of the 6th century. The route also passes the Klenovica pond, formerly called the Lake of Love. Varine, large artificial pits left behind by discontinued flint-sand mining, are also located along the route. These places are stops along the route, not features within Gradišće.

Cultural Sites in the Wider Destination of Općina Žminj

Žminj also offers additional cultural and historical points of interest for trip planning. Žminj Castle was probably built in the 15th century with a square ground plan. Today, a smaller part of the citadel is visible, including one of the four round towers, a wing of the fortress, an outer section of the fortifications and a well-preserved public water cistern dating from 1863. Beside the castle, the Chapel of the Holy Trinity was decorated with artworks by an unknown artist in 1471.

The one-hour guided tour “Žminjska štuorija” presents the history and customs of the people of Žminj, their language, and sacred and secular architecture. It is seasonal; check the dates in advance. The tour includes tastings of specialties from local producers and a demonstration of how typical pasta such as Makaruni and Fuži is prepared. Various exhibitions are held in the tower of Žminj, including exhibitions of handmade nativity scenes, a small tower market and exhibitions about Bartulja. Check current access details before visiting.
