Žminj is considered a historic crossroads of trails in central Istria. In the municipality, karst terrain, rolling topography and distinctive soils shape the landscape. The town also features historic buildings and trails, offering different highlights for a stay. If you are looking for hotels for a trip to Općina Žminj, attractions and festival dates may be a factor when planning your travel dates.

Trails and landscapes around Žminj

Route 761 Žminj–Feštini starts next to the tower of Žminj. It passes the square in front of the parish church of St Michael and through the old town, then continues along the old stone road “Štradi”. Its route thus connects several specific landmarks in the town. The route ends in front of Feštinsko kraljevstvo Cave, which is near the village of Feštini and not far from Žminj.

The cave has safe visitor paths measuring about one hundred metres in total. Notable sinter formations include those known as the “Wizard’s Hat”, “Tower of Babel” and “Bat’s Wing”. The route and the cave are different stops on an outing: the trail passes through Žminj’s old town and ends in front of the cave, while the named formations are inside the cave itself.

Castle, chapel and Calvary

Žminj Castle was probably built in the 15th century with a square ground plan. Today, a smaller part of the citadel is visible. It includes one of the four round towers, a wing of the fortress, an outer section of the fortifications and a well-preserved public water cistern dating from 1863. The visible remains therefore include both parts of the fortifications and the dated cistern.

Next to the castle stands the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. It was adorned with artworks by an unknown artist in 1471. Another historic site is the Calvary in the western part of Žminj, near the road between Pazin and Pula. Built of stone in 1728, it consists of three crosses enclosed by a wall and secured by an iron gate. The castle, chapel and Calvary each offer a different highlight: from the castle’s probably square layout, to the chapel’s decoration, to the clearly structured arrangement of crosses, wall and gate.

Festivals, pasta and seasonal experiences

The one-hour guided tour “Žminjska štuorija” introduces the history and customs of Žminj’s residents, their language, and the sacred and secular architectural heritage. The tour also includes a tasting of specialities from local producers and a demonstration of how to prepare typical types of pasta, such as Makaruni and Fuži. The tour is seasonal; check the dates before your trip.

Various exhibitions are held in the tower of Žminj, including exhibitions of handmade nativity scenes, a small tower market and exhibitions related to Bartulja. Check current visiting arrangements before you go. Bartulja itself is a folk festival in Žminj with a tradition of at least a hundred years, held on the last Saturday in August. It still includes a Mass at the Church of St Bartholomew at the entrance to Žminj; the exact programme may change.

The Istrian Pasta Festival also has its own focus: it aims to preserve and foster the local tradition of Istrian pasta, promote native varieties and support their producers. While “Žminjska štuorija” brings together Makaruni and Fuži with a tasting and a preparation demonstration, the festival focuses on preserving the pasta tradition and supporting its producers.

Plan your travel dates and hotel search

Two different timing details can help with planning: “Žminjska štuorija” is seasonal, while Bartulja is celebrated on the last Saturday in August. This lets you align your travel dates with the focus of your stay.
