Sveti Križ Začretje: Baroque Townscape and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Sveti Križ Začretje
Sveti Križ Začretje combines a baroque townscape with museums and cultural attractions, as well as a hilly cycling route. The town sits on a hill in the Krapinčica Valley. If you are looking for hotels for a stay here, you can first decide whether architectural history, collections, events or cycling will be the focus of your trip.
For regional orientation, Sveti Križ Začretje is on the Zagreb–Macelj road, approximately halfway between Zabok and Krapina.
Baroque Town Center and Architectural History
The historic center is a baroque square: the church is to the north, and the park and castle are to the south. The parish church on the main square dates back to the 12th century. Stonework from an earlier Gothic building has been preserved; chapels, a tower and the choir gallery were added during a comprehensive renovation in the 18th century. Sveti Križ Začretje Castle is an imposing late-Baroque aristocratic residence; its present form dates from the mid-18th century.
Museum and Collections
The Žitnica Museum is housed in a building constructed in 1796, restored and opened to visitors in 2000. On the ground floor, it presents exhibitions by the Zvirek ethnographic group. As individual exhibitions may change, it is advisable to check what is currently on offer before visiting.
A private local history collection can also be visited. It includes edged and firearms, old documents, contracts, letters and photographs associated with Stjepan Jačmenica. The documents and images thus complement the military objects with further insights into local history.
Galleries, Concerts and Events
Since 2010, the Rudi Stipković Gallery has been located in the premises of a local association; check the current visiting arrangements in advance. A piano acquired in 2002 for the Ivan Lovrenčić Gallery made concerts at the Ivan Lovrenčić Gallery possible. If you would like a gallery visit or concert to be part of your stay, check the visiting arrangements or current program.
Prvi glas Zagorja has been held annually since 1968. Auditions are held for this festival and for the children’s festival. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, it is advisable to check the current dates in advance.
Cycling and Culinary Experiences
The Around Začretje route circles the town through hilly terrain. Repeated climbs and descents alternate with panoramic stretches and quieter sections. The changing elevation profile and character of the route make it a different travel option from a stay focused on local history or cultural events.
The 2026 festival program lists “Dan purice i vina” as an experience featuring local cuisine and wine tasting. If you would like to make this culinary event the occasion for your trip, check the event dates in advance.
