The Municipality of Sveti Križ Začretje combines sacred history, art and a cycling route with a distinctive location in Zagorje. The village of Sveti Križ Začretje lies on a hill in the Krapinčica valley, where the river meets the Šemnica and Pačetina streams. It is situated on the Zagreb–Macelj road, roughly halfway between Zabok and Krapina. This gives you a sense of the geography as well as an impression of the different themes that can shape a stay.

Church and Castle: History in Two Places

The parish church in Sveti Križ Začretje dates from the 12th century. Inside is the sculpture “Oplakivanje Krista” (The Lamentation of Christ), dating from the late 15th century or the first half of the 16th century. The church thus brings together two clearly distinct periods of sacred art: the medieval origins of the place of worship and a work created several centuries later.

Sveti Križ Začretje Castle was built at the end of the Baroque era, in several construction phases. The Museum of Traditional Culture and Memory is housed in the castle. Architectural history and the museum’s subject matter meet in the same building, while the construction phases form part of the castle’s history. Those interested in historic buildings and cultural heritage will find a different focus here than at the parish church.

Collections and Exhibitions

The Žitnica building, which houses the Žitnica Museum, was built in 1796. The Ivan Lovrenčić Gallery in the museum contains 16 paintings, 30 drawings and 53 prints. The works are by Ivan Lovrenčić, who donated them to his hometown. The collection thus spans several art forms and offers a different perspective from the ethnographic exhibitions in the same museum.

The Žitnica Museum presents exhibitions by the “Zvirek” group: “From Hemp to Folk Costume,” “My Grandmother’s House” and “Christmas.” Alongside the art collection, these exhibitions focus on traditional culture. Please check the arrangements for visiting in advance.

Another art venue is the Rudi Stipković Gallery. It displays 325 original works by caricaturist Rudi Stipković; visits are possible by prior arrangement. Unlike the Ivan Lovrenčić Gallery, which has a collection of paintings, drawings and prints, this gallery focuses on the work of a single caricaturist.

Cycling Route, Viewpoint and Landscape

Cycling Route 226, “Okolicom Začretja” (Around Začretje), starts and ends in the centre, in front of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. After crossing the Krapinica stream, the route joins the “Za-Za-Kr” cycle path. The described loop therefore starts and finishes in the centre; its further course connects the stream crossing with the cycle path.

Saint Vitus Viewpoint offers views across most of Zagorje and as far as the surrounding mountains. It can be reached by an asphalt road that branches off the old Sveti Križ Začretje–Mirkovec–Zabok road in Ciglenica Zagorska. The pear-tree avenue in Švaljkovec is also part of the municipality’s natural and cultural heritage: it is a monument of garden architecture.

When looking for a hotel, you can first choose the focus of your stay: sacred art and collections on the one hand, or the cycling route and viewpoint on the other. This lets you plan your trip around the things that interest you locally, without conflating the destination’s cultural and scenic aspects.
