Cycling Routes Around Rakovica
The wider destination of Općina Rakovica has an organized and marked cycling network. Several of the designated routes pass through or between places that include Rakovica. Route 31 is a 7.94-kilometer loop through Rakovica, Oštarski Stanovi and Rakovičko Selište. Route 32 is twelve kilometers long and forms a loop between Rakovica, Grabovac Drežnički and Stara Kršlja. Route 31 is therefore shorter than Route 32; both routes are described as loops.
At 39.6 kilometers, with 231 meters of elevation gain and rated “difficult,” Route 33 is markedly different from these two shorter loops. It runs mainly along secondary roads and paths through quiet, sparsely populated places; only short sections follow the main road. Route 34, by contrast, is a 15.6-kilometer connecting route from Rakovica toward Biljevina in Saborsko. It mostly follows natural, unpolluted and cleared forest roads. The length, route type and stated difficulty can help you choose a route to suit your planned cycling itinerary.
Hiking and Exploring Caves
At the nearby Barać Caves excursion site, the hiking trails are free to use; guided hikes are available for a fee. As visiting rules may change, check them before your trip. The Vučja staza is 1.2 kilometers long. The 7.5-kilometer Medvjeđa staza passes viewpoints, forest springs, streams and caves. The two trail lengths allow for different hiking time frames; the longer route also features several described landscape features.
Speleon is also located nearby. It is open to visitors year-round; expert-guided visits last 45 minutes to one hour. Check the current visiting rules before your visit. In the wider destination of Općina Rakovica, Speleon’s permanent exhibition presents the region’s natural and cultural heritage through speleology, geology, archaeology and paleontology. Speleon also displays Ice Age animal fossils found in Upper Barać Cave.
Historic Sites and Traditions
The nearby Stari grad Drežnik fortress is associated with the Frankopan defensive fortifications. Its round defensive tower illustrates 15th- and 16th-century military architecture; the site offers visitors the experience of an early Renaissance castle. The fortress thus complements the nature and cave-related attractions with a glimpse into the region’s history.
In Rakovica, the Church of St. Helena is associated with a local tradition: the story tells of a vow made after a battle with the Turks. The church was destroyed in late 1991 during the war. Reconstruction began in 1997, and the restoration was completed by the end of 2001. The Feast of St. Helena is celebrated each year on August 18 as a traditional gathering. After Mass, the celebration continues in the square in Rakovica.
More Activities in the Area
