Discover Drežnik Grad
Accommodation in Drežnik Grad
When looking for a hotel in Drežnik Grad, the character of the place is a useful starting point. Stari Grad Drežnik represents the area’s defensive history and its location above the Korana Gorge; the Mlinica Cultural Trail and two cycling loops complement the local offerings. You can choose where to stay based on whether you want to include a historical focus, a cultural trail around two kilometres long or a bike ride in your stay. The routes differ not only in length, but also in their connection to Drežnik Grad.
Fortress above the Korana Gorge
Stari Grad Drežnik stands on a rocky cliff above a steep gorge of the Korana River. The fortress played an important role in defending the Frankopan lands against the Ottomans. Its round defensive tower is an example of 15th- and 16th-century military architecture. Stari Grad Drežnik also offers visitors an authentic experience of an early Renaissance castle. Its defensive purpose and architectural form therefore provide two different ways to explore the history of the place.
Church and cultural trail
A more recent cultural landmark with a precise date is the parish church of Saint Anthony of Padua. On 20 December 2025, the renovated church in Drežnik Grad and a new stone altar were consecrated. This event adds a more recent religious perspective to the fortress theme.
The Mlinica Cultural Trail is accessible from Drežnik Grad and is about two kilometres long. Information boards and signposts help visitors find their way. For your planning, it offers a clear contrast with the longer cycling loops: the trail is a manageable length, while the two cycling routes are just under 27 to 28 kilometres long.
Cycling routes and educational trail
Cycling route R35 is a 27.9-kilometre loop with 102 metres of elevation gain. It approaches Drežnik Grad from the direction of Čatrnja via a gravel road. Cycling route 37 starts in Drežnik Grad, is also a loop and is 26.9 kilometres long. The routes differ in length by just one kilometre; however, their connection to the area is different: R35 is described as approaching from Čatrnja, while Drežnik Grad is the starting point for route 37.
Another attraction along the Korana is the Water Route educational trail. It runs above the Korana Gorge between Stari Grad Drežnik and Korana Campsite. Alongside the cycling loops, visitors can therefore explore an educational trail by the canyon and the shorter Mlinica Cultural Trail, each offering a different way to explore the Drežnik Grad area.
Road connections and the wider area
Drežnik Grad is located on the Slunj–Petrovo Selo–Bihać road. There is another road connection for the wider destination of Općina Rakovica: the main state road runs through the municipality along the Karlovac–Slunj–Rakovica–Grabovac–Plitvice Lakes route. This regional information refers to Općina Rakovica and not to an additional road connection within Drežnik Grad.
The cycling network information also applies to the wider destination of Općina Rakovica: there is an organised and signposted network of cycling routes there. The permanent exhibition at Speleon also contributes to the cultural experience of Općina Rakovica. It presents the region’s natural and cultural heritage through four themes: speleology, geology, archaeology and palaeontology. This makes it possible to distinguish local trail and fortress themes from the offerings of the wider destination.
