Discover Vrhovac: Cultural History and Routes
Accommodation in Vrhovac
Vrhovac can be explored through two interests: cultural history and route options. The Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian offers an art-historical point of interest, while Stare Seoske Igre puts local traditions at the center. There are also several routes that differ in length and course.
A church with a medieval core and Baroque character
The Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian has a medieval core. It acquired its Baroque appearance through changes in the late 17th and 18th centuries. The furnishings include a preserved Baroque side altar of the Three Kings, which features a relief of the Adoration of the Magi, dated 1660. The date 1660 predates the cited renovation phases of the late 17th and 18th centuries. The different periods can therefore be distinguished: the building’s core is medieval, the relief is clearly dated, and its Baroque character came about through later changes. Those interested in architectural and art history can consider the building’s development and its furnishings separately. The subjects also differ: the church is named after Cosmas and Damian, the side altar is dedicated to the Three Kings, and the relief depicts their adoration. This helps distinguish the church’s name, the altar and the image’s subject.
Stare Seoske Igre and local cultural preservation
Stare Seoske Igre is a traditional event in Vrhovac intended to preserve local customs, games, songs and dances. The City of Ozalj described the 2022 edition as the 19th event. KUD Vrhovac was founded in 2000 and was publicly recognized by Ozalj for preserving local cultural heritage. This recognition aligns with the festival’s goal of preserving local traditions. An edition was scheduled for July 18 and 19, 2026, with KUD Vrhovac set to organize it. The Sunday program was to include children’s folklore performances and children’s games.
Compare routes and distances
The long Munjara route of the Ozalj–Vrhovac Trail is 24.7 kilometers long; the recreational Slavina route is 7.9 kilometers. Slavina is therefore just under a third as long as Munjara. Course details may change from one edition to another, so check the specifications for the relevant edition before planning.
Route 9 is a 28-kilometer circular route, Ozalj–Krašić–Ozalj. The recommended direction passes through Vrhovac; the climb runs through fragrant meadows and open fields up to the village. A 59-kilometer cycling route from Ozalj passes through Vrhovac. The Žumberak–Samoborsko gorje Nature Park can be reached by cycling route. At 28 kilometers, Route 9 is only slightly longer than the long Munjara route at 24.7 kilometers; the cycling route’s 59 kilometers make for a considerably longer journey. The routes also differ in form: Route 9 is a circular route, while the cycling route leads to the nature park.
