When looking for a hotel in Ozalj, your travel interests can influence your choice of destination: the town combines historic buildings and museum exhibits with industrial history on the Kupa, hiking and fishing. The Old Town and its collections offer a cultural focus; trails and fishing competitions add specific activities. This makes it easy to consider Ozalj in terms of the things that interest you most during your stay.

Old Town, Palace and Museum

Stari grad Ozalj stands on a high rock above the Kupa; its history dates back to the 6th century. The monumental Zrinski Palace, built on a steep rock in the 16th century, is particularly well known. Frescoes and carved Glagolitic inscriptions have survived on the walls, while the wooden-shingle roof complements the architecture. A railway tunnel runs beneath the foundations of the Old Town—another distinct aspect of the town’s history, bringing historic structures and transport infrastructure together in one place.

The Zavičajni Muzej Ozalj is located in the Old Town and presents 6,000 years of history through written records and archaeological artefacts. A dedicated section focuses on the painter Slava Raškaj. Alongside its long history, the museum thus offers a distinct focus on an individual artist. The Etno Park Ozalj is also part of the museum. Designed as an open-air museum, it showcases traditional architecture and objects from everyday life in the pre-industrial era.

The Etno Park includes residential and farm buildings, as well as glimpses into rural rooms, kitchens and storerooms with authentic furnishings. The different types of buildings and rooms convey how traditional architecture and everyday objects fit together. The history of religious architecture is also part of Ozalj’s attractions: a detour on the cycling route leads to the Baroque parish church of St. Vitus, first mentioned in 1349.

The History of Technology on the Kupa

The history of energy is also part of Ozalj’s cultural heritage. Since 2007, the HE Ozalj 1 hydroelectric power plant has been listed as protected cultural property in Croatia’s register. Electricity has been generated in its original building since 1908. The power station building is considered a Neo-Romantic example of early 20th-century industrial architecture. Here, the building’s long history of use and its architectural design come together.

Munjara is a hydroelectric power plant on the Kupa in Ozalj. It continues to generate electricity and has a castle-like appearance. Together with the Old Town high above the river, Munjara shows how differently the buildings in Ozalj relate to the landscape and technology: the palace defines the rock, while the power plant combines industrial use with an unusual exterior.

Hiking Route, Fishing and Surroundings

The Dubovac hiking trail starts in Ozalj and runs along the foothills between Karlovac and Ozalj, passing Vodenica and Sveti KriĹľ, before reaching Karlovac. The 28-kilometre route connects the old towns of Ozalj and Dubovac. It passes through old villages with preserved traditional architecture and is classified as a day hike. If you want to include a longer hiking route when choosing your destination, this offers a clearly described trail with named stops and a specific endpoint.

Fishing is also organised in Ozalj. Waters managed by ŠRD Ozalj include the Kupa and Dobra rivers, nine Šljunčare lakes, and the Kamenica and Ribnički streams. The association holds fishing competitions, including the international Kup grada Ozlja, league competitions, a county cup and other club competitions. The recurring Kup Grada Ozlja is a float-fishing competition held at the Šljunčare lakes. For anyone interested in fishing, both the waters under the association’s care and the organised competitions are part of what connects the activity to the town.

The seasonal leisure scene also includes a bathing area on the banks of the Kupa near Munjara, where swimming is recommended. If you plan to visit, check the current conditions beforehand. The surrounding area also offers a geographical point of interest: Vrlovka Cave is in Kamanje, 6.5 kilometres from Ozalj; the wider area is also associated with the wine cellars of Vivodina.
