Avren is a destination for travelers who want to experience nature, culture and regional traditions within one municipality. Highlights include protected forest and wetland areas, a stretch of the Black Sea coast, ethnographic exhibits and places connected with astronomy. This offers several options: you can include nature, cultural sites or astronomy in your travel plans, depending on your interests.

Forests, wetlands and the coast

The “Kamchia” protected zone includes areas in the villages of Bliznatsi, Dabravino, Krusha, Kitka, Ravna Gora and Sadovo in Avren Municipality. It protects alluvial forests, mixed riverside forests and Pannonian forests. Alluvial and riverside forests point to woodland habitats connected with water, while Pannonian forests add another specifically protected type. Visitors interested in landscapes and nature conservation will find more than just one natural feature here.

The Kamchia Reserve covers an area of 842.1 hectares. A total of 258 bird species have been recorded in the area, and visitors can hike along marked trails. This brings together a specific hiking option and a documented view of the birdlife. The marked trails offer a clear reason to include hiking in your plans; the number of species describes the area’s ecological character.

Another type of landscape is the “Limana” protected area in the Pasha Dere landscape. It is a coastal liman and a natural wetland with rare plants and water-loving birds. Unlike the protected forest types, the wetland is the focus here. For travelers who organize nature areas by their characteristic habitats, this distinction is more useful than a simple list of place names.

The municipality’s coastal offering includes the “Kamchia” holiday complex, which extends across 5,900 decares along the 20-kilometer Black Sea coastline of Avren Municipality. The complex’s area and the length of the coastline provide two specific measures of this coastal setting. Alongside the protected areas, the coast is also a distinct focus for trip planning.

Culture and living traditions

Tsarevtsi offers a specific cultural highlight: the “Sv. sv. Konstantini Elena” museum complex houses a collection of ethnographic exhibits and includes a church and a monastery school with a carpet-weaving workshop. At the “Tsarkva – uchilishte” museum complex, visitors can watch the carpet-weaving process. The experience ranges from exhibits to a hands-on craft process.

The traditions of the Koledari custom and Lazaruvane are also still observed in the settlements of Avren Municipality. These customs complement the museum and craft experiences with living traditions and offer a distinct glimpse into the municipality’s cultural life.

Astronomy and other experiences

Astronomy also has a presence in Avren. The “Pat kam zvezdite” educational trail was established in Avren in 2006. Avren is also home to an astronomical observatory; various astronomy clubs from Varna held regular observations there. The educational trail adds a learning dimension, while the observations demonstrate the observatory’s connection to astronomy.

The “Kapla” tourist park complex in Avren opened on July 17, 2025, adding another tourist destination to the range of options.

Another local highlight is in Priseltsi: the “Hadzhi Kolyo” han is a complex of restored old houses where guests can enjoy traditional Bulgarian dishes. Check before your trip whether food service is available.
