Shiroka Laka combines cultural attractions, an annual masked ritual and hiking routes. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you want to focus on exhibitions, the Pesponedelnik Festival or hiking. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can start by choosing a destination based on these interests.

Museum, Education and Religious History

The Vladimir Rilski Museum Gallery is housed in a restored former cell school building next to the Church of the Dormition. Its exhibitions cover Christianity in the Central Rhodopes, two centuries of education and the work of Vladimir Rilski. Religious themes, the history of education and artistic work are therefore all part of the same museum gallery’s program. The exhibition program may change.

Information for Tours and Reservations

The local tourist information center provides tourist maps and information about routes. It can also arrange trained mountain guides and tours. It also assists visitors with accommodation and restaurant reservations, as well as selected folklore programs.

If you plan to use these services, reconfirm the available services and contact details before your trip. This lets you direct questions about routes or reservations to the relevant contact point rather than assuming that arrangements have been made.

Pesponedelnik in March

The Pesponedelnik Festival takes place annually on the first Sunday in March. It is a masked ritual associated with fertility, abundance and health. Since the date and program vary from year to year, check the specific date if you want to plan your trip around the festival. Its recurring date provides a seasonal reference point, but for planning purposes, the program for that particular year matters.

Hiking from Shiroka Laka

Hiking routes start in Shiroka Laka and include both short walks and day trips. This offers a choice of different time commitments: a short walk may take up part of the day, while a day trip allows more time for hiking. Check trail conditions and transportation arrangements locally before planning a tour.

More Places in the Wider Smolyan Destination

The wider Smolyan destination also offers cultural and nature-related attractions. In Mogilitsa, in Smolyan Municipality, the Agushevi Konatsi are designated as a cultural monument of national significance for art and history. In Stoykite, also in Smolyan Municipality, the exhibition “The Bagpipe: Ancient and Eternal” presents bagpipe artistry and the traditional craft of bagpipe making from all of Bulgaria’s folklore regions. Opened in 2022, the exhibition interactively combines a museum, an ethnographic art gallery and a sound installation. Check current access arrangements locally.

Near Koshnitsa, a marked hiking trail leads to the entrance of Kaleto Cave; there are rest areas along the route. At the Kaleto cave complex, visitors can try a 40 m alpine swing jump. The rope is secured at the highest point of the rock arch. Confirm locally whether this activity is available.

Uhlovitsa Cave is also located near Koshnitsa in the wider Smolyan destination. It is 460 m long and about 3.5 million years old; its dendritic formations strongly resemble sea corals. The developed section is distinct from the full cave: it is 330 m long and reached via a path with 280 metal steps.
