Pamporovo offers two distinct ways to shape your trip: winter sports in the Pamporovo–Mechi Chal ski areas and hiking trails that begin in Pamporovo. The hiking routes described differ considerably: one is considered relatively easy, while another is a long mountain route.

Skiing and Snowboarding in Pamporovo

Pamporovo is connected to the Pamporovo–Mechi Chal ski areas. They have ski slopes and lifts, as well as opportunities for skiing and snowboarding. If winter sports are central to your travel plans, check the availability of slopes and lifts before you arrive. This will help you plan your stay around the specific conditions for your travel dates.

Hiking Trails with Varying Levels of Difficulty

A marked hiking trail begins in Pamporovo and follows the Chernatitsa ridge. It is considered relatively easy and suitable for different age groups. Check trail conditions and markings on site, and keep mountain safety in mind. The description “relatively easy” does not replace your own assessment of current conditions.

Another long mountain route also begins in Pamporovo. It follows a well-preserved Roman road in the direction of Persenk, then continues through the Rhodope landscape. This gives you two different route profiles to choose from: one described as relatively easy, following the ridge, and an explicitly long hike with a section along a Roman road. Before undertaking this longer route, check conditions and logistics.

Chepelare as the Wider Destination

Most of the Pamporovo holiday complex lies within the Municipality of Chepelare. The Municipality of Chepelare is located on National Road II-86 between Plovdiv and Smolyan. Pamporovo is reported to have 50 kilometres of slopes for alpine disciplines, served by eight lifts. A mountain bike park with facilities and trails was also established there in 2012. These details add to the picture of the destination’s infrastructure beyond its skiing and snowboarding opportunities.

The Mechi Chal panoramic platform is also part of the wider Chepelare destination. It lies at an altitude of 1,852 metres and offers views of the surrounding area. Chepelare itself has a clock tower over 100 years old, regarded as one of the town’s landmarks. The Church of Saint Athanasius the Great dates from 1834 and is a cultural monument of national significance.

Museums in Chepelare include the Ski and Sports Museum, with nearly 1,000 exhibits, and the Museum of Rhodope Karst. Its five themes cover speleology and the abundance of karst features in the Rhodopes and Bulgaria. The Chepelare Tourist Information Centre provides visitors with information about regional attractions and places of interest to tourists.

Another hiking trail in the wider Chepelare destination is the “Stara Vodenitsa” eco-trail. It begins at the last building of the ski factory in Chepelare and leads to the old mill. A description dated 17 August 2022 gives its length as three kilometres and the walking time as one hour. Check the route, trail conditions, and the stated distance and walking time again on site.
