When looking for a hotel in Gela, the village can be understood above all through its mountain setting and religious heritage. Gela lies in the Perelik section of the Rhodopes at almost 1,500 metres above sea level. The village is located at the foot of Golyam Perelik, Orpheus Peak and Turlata Peak, and is surrounded by meadows and forests where wild fruits and herbs grow.

Churches, Monastery Remains and the Orpheus Tradition

Four active chapels lie outside the village: the Ascension, St. George, St. Marina and the Twelve Apostles. Access may vary; check locally before visiting. Gela’s Holy Trinity Church was built in 1910 beside the remains of an early Christian monastery that was destroyed by fire in 1540. Another historical layer is revealed by the early Christian basilica: it was part of a large Christian complex that arose at the beginning of the fifth century during the Christianisation of the Bessi.

Local tradition is also part of the area’s cultural history: one local tradition links Gela to the birthplace of Orpheus. Those interested in ancient sites can visit the Thracian fortress of Gradishte, about five kilometres from Gela. Together with the churches and monastery remains, it reveals different aspects of the area’s historical heritage, though these sites do not belong to the same period or serve the same purpose.

Ilinden and Outdoor Activities

The Ilinden gathering has its historical roots in family reunions near the Chapel of St. Elijah. It is held on the first Sunday in August in the Ilinden meadows above Gela. The gathering includes spit-roasted meat, bagpipe music, dancing and informal bagpipe competitions. Its fixed date and traditions give the event a distinct place alongside the area’s enduring church and landscape themes.

The terrain around Gela is suitable for hiking. Check the weather and trail conditions locally before planning your hike. The landscape of mountains, meadows and forests offers a different focus from visits to religious and historical sites.

Getting There and Regional Cuisine

The route to Gela via Narechenski Bani, Hvoyna, Chepelare and Shiroka Laka includes a rougher road section over the last four kilometres. As road conditions can change, check them locally before you set off.

Rural cuisine in Rhodope tourism includes dishes such as patatnik, cheverme and Smilyan beans. Availability of individual dishes varies by establishment. This regional culinary tradition complements the area’s cultural and natural themes, but should not be understood as a standard offering at individual establishments in Gela.

More Places to Explore in the Wider Smolyan Destination

The wider Smolyan destination includes other distinct cultural sites. The Agushevi Konatsi in Mogilitsa, Smolyan Municipality, is designated a cultural monument of national significance in the field of art history. In Stoykite, also in Smolyan Municipality, the “The Bagpipe: Old and Eternal” exhibition presents bagpipe art and the traditional craft of bagpipe making from all of Bulgaria’s folklore regions. Its interactive format combines a museum, an ethnographic art gallery and a sound installation. The collection opened in 2022; check current access arrangements before travelling.

Caves and trails are also part of this explicitly regional context: At Kaleto Cave near Koshnitsa, a marked hiking trail leads to the entrance and has rest areas along the way. At the cave complex, visitors can try a 40-metre alpine pendulum swing; the rope is attached to the highest point of the rock arch. Confirm locally before travelling whether this activity is available. Uhlovitsa Cave is 460 metres long and about 3.5 million years old; its dendritic formations strongly resemble sea corals. The developed section is 330 metres long and is reached by a path with 280 metal steps.
