Chepelare offers several ways to plan your visit: Mechi Chal represents seasonal mountain tourism, the Health Trail is a marked route, and the Museum of Rhodope Karst explores caving and karst. There are also local sports facilities and traditional dishes. If you are looking for hotels in Chepelare, these different highlights offer practical guidance for planning your trip.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

The Chepelare Tourist Information Center welcomes visitors and introduces regional attractions and places of tourist interest. It can help you find your way to destinations in the region. Buses on Bulgaria’s national and municipal road network pass through the Chepelare bus station. Check current transport arrangements before your trip rather than relying on them for your arrival plans.

Mechi Chal and Outdoor Trails

The Mechi Chal area lies south of Chepelare and offers a clear seasonal change: in winter, visitors ski on lift-served slopes, while summer is focused on mountain tourism. The Mechi Chal viewpoint is at an elevation of 1,852 metres. The centuries-old spruce known as “Chepelare Heroes” is another notable natural landmark in the area; it can be reached on foot or by lift. If you plan to use the lift to get there, check its operating status in advance. The Chepelare Health Trail is marked with green wooden signs.

Nearby are the Wonderful Bridges, natural rock bridges in an old spruce forest at an elevation of 1,450 metres. There are railings around the rocks and stone steps carved into the rock for visitors. Check the condition of these facilities before your visit. This will help you distinguish between seasonal activities at Mechi Chal, the marked trail and a trip to the rock bridges when planning your visit.

Museum and Karst Landscape

The Museum of Rhodope Karst is devoted to speleology and the rich karst landscape of the Rhodopes and Bulgaria. Its exhibits include a complete cave bear skeleton. The museum thus pairs a specific exhibit with its broader themes of caving and karst. The museum collection was transformed into the Museum of Rhodope Karst in 1980; the museum is part of Bulgaria’s national museum network. It is considered the only museum of its kind on the Balkan Peninsula.
