Gorges, waterfalls and cultural sites shape the travel experience in Tran. The Yablanitsa Gorge lies between Vrabcha, Transka Bankya and Tran and was formed by the Yablanitsa River. In the areas of the town of Tran and the village of Bankya in Tran Municipality, it is designated as a natural landmark; the relevant notice was published on March 27, 2026. An eco-trail passes through karst-erosion landforms and nature rich in species. The route through the gorge begins in the village of Transka Bankya.

Gorge Trails and Nature Watching

The Erma Gorge also offers a variety of natural features: visitors can observe unique flora and fauna as well as numerous endemic species. The eco-trail passes through the man-made tunnel in the rock “Zhilav kamak” and continues to a viewing platform at the rock “Tsarkvishteto.” There is also a landscaped park by the river where you can relax. An outing here can therefore combine different experiences: landforms and views along the trail, nature watching and a break by the water.

Vrabcha Waterfall and St. Petka Rock Chapel

The four-metre-high Vrabcha Waterfall is in the area of the village of Vrabcha in Tran Municipality and is designated as a natural landmark. The relevant notice was published on March 27, 2026. Beside the waterfall, the water has carved a 20-metre-deep rock tunnel. A short path beside the road to Vrabcha follows the Vrabchanska River and reaches the waterfall after about 15 minutes on foot.

Another destination combines cultural history with distinctive visible features: footprints and handprints of the saint, as well as a petrified loaf of bread, can still be seen in St. Petka Rock Chapel. The chapel is designated as an archaeological cultural monument. In summer, it is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In winter, visits are possible Wednesday to Sunday by calling to arrange them the day before; the chapel is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Check visiting hours before setting out.

Museums and Historic Buildings

At the Yogurt Museum in Studen izvor, you can learn more about the life and work of Dr. Stamen Grigorov, discoverer of the bacterium Lactobacillus bulgaricus, which forms the basis of yogurt culture. The exhibition presents the history of yogurt, from home fermentation to modern technologies. The Historical Museum in Tran houses two sections side by side: a history section and an art history section. Together, they offer different ways to explore history and art.

The church at Erul Monastery also offers several links to the past. Its architecture is characteristic of the period from the 11th to the 14th century, and the church also houses valuable old icons from the 17th and 18th centuries. In Nasalevtsi, the Nasalevtsi Oak stands beside the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary; the tree is more than six centuries old. These distinct time periods—medieval architecture, icons from later centuries and a centuries-old tree—give each of these places its own focus.

Cycling Routes of Different Lengths

Cycling routes of varying lengths and difficulty levels are available. The Zhdreloto and Bogoina areas have a nine-kilometre mountain biking route. The start and finish are at the information centre, and the difficulty ranges from easy to moderate. Route 102 of the “VeloErul” circuit is longer, at 27 kilometres, and takes about four hours. It passes through the village of Erul, crosses mixed terrain, is rated moderate in difficulty and is marked in blue. The routes therefore differ both in distance and in their stated difficulty. Check the condition of the mountain biking route before your ride.

A Look at Pernik Province

Beyond Tran, Pernik Province also offers a cultural point of interest: the Surova folk festival in the Pernik region takes place every year on January 13 and 14, celebrating the New Year according to the old calendar. In 2015, the festival was added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
