The municipality of Pernik lies between the Vitosha, Golo Bardo and Lyulin mountains. Its attractions range from a medieval fortress and the history of coal mining to caves, springs and hiking trails. You can plan your trip around the things that interest you most: historic places, insights into mining or time in the mountain landscape.

Fortress and Mining History

The medieval Pernik Fortress stands on a rocky plateau in the southwestern part of the city of Pernik. At the beginning of the 11th century, Krakra was the ruler of the fortress and the settlement of Pernik. The site thus combines its striking position on the plateau with a specific historical figure and period.

The Underground Mining Museum offers a different glimpse into the past. It is considered unique on the Balkan Peninsula and is located in two preserved tunnels of the first underground mine, known as the “Old Mines” of 1891. Together, the two tunnels are about 630 metres long. The museum presents more than a century of coal-mining history, from manual labour to mechanised coal-extraction equipment.

The museum is open for visits daily, accepts groups of 3 to 20 people and offers visits on the hour. Check visiting hours before you arrive. This makes it easier to plan your museum visit around your schedule.

Caves, a Spring and Hiking Trails

Duhla Cave has underground galleries with a total length of up to 18 kilometres, extending across seven main levels. Six underground rivers and streams also run through the cave. Its length, levels and waterways give an impression of the scale of this cave system and make it a distinctive geological feature of the municipality.

The Živata Voda spring is near Bosnek. Abundant water flows from the nostrils of a crocodile head carved into the rock—an unusual natural phenomenon that also gives the place its distinctive stone character. Hiking trails from the spring continue to Bosnek, Kladnitsa and Chuypetlovo. These destinations offer concrete options for planning a hike from the spring.

Another marked trail leads from the Selimitsa hut to Cherni Vrah, as well as to the Ostritsa and Rudnicher huts. Alongside the trails starting at Živata Voda, you can choose routes with other specified destinations. Check the local conditions before setting out.

Churches and Archaeological Evidence

The Monastery of St Nicholas lies east of Kladnitsa. Its monastery church features frescoes by Konstantin Gerov. In Pernik’s Tsrkva neighbourhood, there is a Thracian sanctuary dating from the 2nd to the 4th century, which has been conserved and partially restored. Finds include marble votive tablets and statuettes of the Thracian Horseman and healing deities; they are kept at the Pernik Historical Museum.

Studena adds another historic site: the Church of St George dates from the 14th to the 16th century. Together, these sites reveal different facets of history, from a Thracian sanctuary and its museum finds to churches with preserved frescoes and medieval dates.

Rudartsi: Mineral Water and Connections

Rudartsi has a spa centre with mineral water. It also has two outdoor pools with mineral water at 29°C. Before visiting, check whether the pools are open and which facilities are currently available. Rudartsi has regular bus connections to Pernik and Sofia; check the timetables for your travel dates. This information may help you choose a starting point for planning your trip, without having to devote your days to just one theme.
