Ugarchin: Landscapes, Cultural Heritage and Festivals
Accommodation in Ugarchin
Ugarchin is characterized by wooded and bare hills, as well as narrow and broad meadows and plains typical of the Fore-Balkan. Meandering rivers wind through green meadows and, in places, run between steep rocks. Several themes can help you plan your trip: protected landscapes, natural sites, churches and local festival traditions. This lets you focus your stay on what interests you most.
Landscapes and Natural Sites
Part of Studenets Nature Park lies within the lands of Dragana, Kalenik and Katunets in Ugarchin Municipality. The “Central Balkan–Buffer” Natura 2000 protected area under the Habitats Directive includes the municipal districts of Sopot, Lesidren and Kirchevo. In Mikre, the Mikre and Mandrata caves are included in a Natura 2000 protected area under the Habitats Directive. The municipality therefore has several designated protected areas: part of a nature park, a protected area covering three municipal districts and two caves.
Several smaller protected areas can also be identified precisely. Shumnatitsa is a 27.4-hectare protected landscape within the lands of Sopot and Mikre. It was designated in 1987 to protect a characteristic landscape. Anomir covers 3 hectares in Lesidren, was designated in 1964 to protect a characteristic landscape, and is part of the Natura 2000 protected areas. Petko Bunar is in Golets, covers 5 hectares and was also designated in 1964 to protect a characteristic landscape.
Natural attractions include the Nedini Lakes near Lesidren, the Kaleto landscape near Kirchevo and the Rudariska Smelter near Lesidren. The Roman road between Golets and Kirkova Mahala is also among them. If you plan to take the route, check its current condition in advance.
Cultural Heritage, Churches and Memorial Sites
The ancient settlement of “Perdevoyka,” west of Sopot, is immovable cultural heritage. The medieval Kichera Fortress, also known as Gradishte, is near Lesidren. In Katunets, the Church of St. Archangel Michael is classified as local artistic and architectural-artistic cultural heritage.
A memorial plaque in Sopot commemorates 57 residents who fell in the Balkan Wars and the First World War. It is included in the regional register of war memorials and plaques. The Orthodox Church of St. Paraskeva in Ugarchin is permanently open and holds regular services. As service times may change, check the current schedule before visiting. The Church of St. George in Lesidren is considered fully developed, functional and well maintained.
Festivals and Activities
The “Svetii” spring festival has been celebrated in Ugarchin since 1929. The festival was initiated by local teachers who wanted to organize a Ugarchin national evening with folk songs and dances on March 22. A special wedding soup, “svatbarska chorba,” is prepared for residents and visitors and served after the festival program.
The traditional “Truffle Festival” in Ugarchin is an annual gathering of truffle hunters. The 2025 edition began with a truffle-hunting competition. The Morun Reservoir in Ugarchin Municipality is also described as a good place for recreation. Sport fishing is possible at the Sopot Reservoir, where there are also sites for camping and bivouacking. Check local conditions before your trip.
