Lukovit combines a distinctive karst landscape with the Zlatna Panega River and significant rock churches. The region offers several different themes to help you plan your trip: the Iskar-Panega Geopark comprises two landscape areas, excursions are available on the river, and historic churches preserve frescoes from different centuries. You can therefore shape your stay around nature, water activities or cultural heritage.

Iskar-Panega Geopark: two distinct landscape areas

The Iskar-Panega Geopark consists of the Karlukovo karst complex and Panega Landscape Park. The features linked by the geopark include geological, geomorphological and palaeontological phenomena of aesthetic, cultural and/or historical value. Its two-part layout provides clear guidance for planning: Karlukovo is the karst complex, while Panega is the landscape park.

The Karlukovo karst complex is a protected natural landmark within the municipality of Lukovit. The Kuklite rock formations are on the karst plateau; in the Kötlen area is a particularly well-defined former meander of the Zlatna Panega. These examples show different aspects of the landscape: rock formations on the plateau and a prominent former river course in the Panega Landscape Park area.

At the entrance to the geopark, in the car park just before Lukovit, there is a tourist information centre. Maps, brochures and other information about the geopark are available there. The geopark also offers educational and information programmes for residents and tourists. The centre and its programmes provide a useful point of reference if you want to explore the region’s geological, natural and cultural themes.

River excursions and Panega Landscape Park

Panega Attraction is located in the heart of Panega Landscape Park and offers excursions on the Zlatna Panega. Options include a pedal boat, a rowing boat, single and double kayaks, and an excursion and photography cruise boat. The selection includes both smaller boats powered by their passengers and a cruise boat for excursions and photography trips. Panega Attraction operates year-round.

The river is also part of the landscape beyond the boat trips: the old meander of the Zlatna Panega is in the Kötlen area. This highlights two distinct aspects of the river: a trip on the water and a striking landform in the Panega area. Which one you focus on depends on whether you are more interested in the watercraft on offer or the river-shaped landscape.

Trails and rocky landscapes

The Aglena ecological trail follows the Vit River through the Studenets protected area. It starts at the Slona rock formation and leads to the site known as the People’s Cave. Trail facilities include waymarking, visitor areas with tables and benches, a gazebo and a shelter, a wooden bridge, information boards and signposts. The route and its named endpoints give the trail a specific connection to the river and the rock formations.

Prohodna Cave is also part of the Karlukovo karst complex. A turn-off from the road to Lukovit leads to a car park at the small cave entrance. The cave has sport climbing routes in several sectors and at different grades; they are considered among the most difficult in Bulgaria.

Rock churches and regional history

The surviving church of the Karlukovo Monastery is named “Dormition of the Mother of God.” It was built in the second half of the 16th century as part of the large monastery complex. The rock church of St Marina preserves fragmentary frescoes from the 14th century and is accessible via a movable platform. At St Grigorij, two layers of frescoes from the 14th and 17th centuries have survived in fragments. The churches therefore offer different historical points of reference: the construction date of the monastery church and frescoes from several centuries in the rock churches.

A clearly dated example of regional food culture is Banitsa Day in Rumyantsevo. On 10 and 11 September 2022, it was held as part of the traditional autumn fair, with a themed culinary competition.
