Lukovit lies on the banks of the Zlatna Panega. River landscapes, karst and cultural history give a stay here a variety of possible focuses. Around the town, natural features include the Zlatna Panega Canyon, the Kotlen area and the Kuklite rock formations on the Karlukovo Karst Plateau. The caves and rock formations in the surrounding area include Temnata Dupka, Prohodna, Strupanets and Provar tenika.

River Landscapes and Geopark

The wider Lukovit destination encompasses the Iskar-Panega Geopark, which is divided into the Karlukovo Karst Complex and Panega Landscape Park. It brings together geological, geomorphological and palaeontological sites with others of aesthetic, cultural or historical value. The Kotlen area is also home to a particularly well-defined old meander of the Zlatna Panega—a distinctive former bend in the river.

The Panega Attraction near Lukovit is located in Panega Landscape Park, is part of the Geopark and includes an eco-trail. The wider Lukovit destination also offers excursions on the Zlatna Panega: by pedal boat and rowing boat, single and double kayaks, and an excursion and photo-cruise boat. The attraction operates year-round. Check current conditions before planning a specific outing.

Walking Routes and Getting Around

The Pogledets walking trail is a local way to explore Lukovit on foot. The Geopark routes use a sign-based wayfinding system. Visitor infrastructure also includes wooden bridges, pavilions, stairs, shelters, picnic areas and platforms. As the condition of the signage and facilities may change, it is advisable to check current conditions before setting out.

The “Magic of Panega” route can be travelled by car with sections on foot, or explored by bicycle. Within Lukovit Municipality, it includes the Sergey Rumyantsev House Museum in Rumyantsevo and the open-air sculpture site in Petrevene. The two stops offer different cultural highlights: one is a house museum, the other features outdoor sculptures. For getting around, you can choose between the described car-and-walking option and cycling, without assuming a particular route length or walking time.

Mountain biking is associated with Karlukovo and Prohodna Cave near Lukovit. Bungee jumping is associated with the arch of Prohodna Cave; “Koncheto” is also one of the places in Lukovit associated with mountaineering. If you plan any of these activities, check current access and operating conditions beforehand.

Culture and History

The Saznanie 1895 community cultural centre in Lukovit was founded in 1895 and has a long amateur theatre tradition. It adds a firm connection to local cultural history alongside the area’s natural attractions.

At Karlukovo Monastery, the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God was built in the second half of the 16th century. The church is accessible and can be visited, but restrictions apply because it is located within a hospital area. Near Karlukovo, the rock-hewn Church of St Gregory preserves fragmentary layers of frescoes from the 14th and 17th centuries. A visit brings together traces from different periods: the construction history of the monastery church and the surviving frescoes of the rock-hewn church.
